Match Report

Sydney has moved into the top eight for the first time this season after the Swans comfortably accounted for an undermanned Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night. The Lions, already severely hit by injury in 2014, rested key forward Jonathan Brown, with regular backman Daniel Merrett shifting up the ground to take on a target role. The Swans were also without their marquee key forward, Lance Franklin, but made up for that with a far more experienced line-up than that of the Lions.

The Swans kicked the first three goals of the match, two of them to Adam Goodes in his first full match back from injury, and were never headed from that point. Only inaccuracy prevented them from being further than 12 points ahead at the first break, as they took a 3.6 to 2.0 lead into the huddle.

They straightened up in the second quarter, booting 5.2 to 1.5 to lead by 33 points at the long break. There was little improvement from the inexperienced Lions in the third term, as Sydney added a further 6.3 for the quarter while Brisbane managed just 2.1.

Rounding out a strong four-quarter performance, the Swans added another 4.4 in the last term, restricting Brisbane to just 1.2. The final margin of 79 points was probably a true reflection of the current difference between the two teams.

Jarrad McVeigh was magnificent for the victors, collecting 235 touches and pulling in seven marks, while Josh Kennedy (34 disposals and two goals) and Luke Parker (25 possessions, two goals) also made significant contributions. For the Lions Tom Rockliff (11 tackles and 30 disposals) put in a fantastic four-quarter effort, and Marco Paparone (nine marks, 18 possessions) and Nick Robertson, who laid seven tackles and had 16 disposals in just his fourth AFL game, were also good.

For the Swans, the win was a nice lead in to a huge game at Stadium Australia next Friday night when Buddy Franklin, assuming he's fit, will take on his old team Hawthorn. A win in that match would see Sydney pushing for a top-four spot. Brisbane meanwhile will return to the Gabba on Friday night to face Essendon, as the Lions look for a second win in 2014.
