Match Report

Gold Coast caused one of the upsets of round seven with a comprehensive 43-point win against highly fancied North Melbourne at Docklands on Sunday afternoon. The Suns delivered what was almost a knock-out blow in the first quarter with a seven-goal-to-one term and then withstood a Kangaroo fightback that saw North almost draw level, before breaking away again in the lat quarter to record their first-ever victory at Melbourne's second stadium.

The Suns began with a rush with goals to Charlie Dixon, Dion Prestia and Michael Rischitelli in the first six minutes, then absorbed pressure from North Melbourne in the next seven minutes as the Kangaroos tried to work their way into the match before kicking another four consecutive goals in 10 minutes (via Tom Lynch, Gary Ablett, Harley Bennell and Brandon Matera) to amazingly go to a 40-point lead at the 25-minute mark. Drew Petrie saved the Kangaroos from a goalless first quarter with North's first at the 27-minute mark but the Suns held sway by 34 points at the first break.

North Melbourne gradually worked its way into the match in the second term, a goal to Levi Greenwood beginning the long haul back. By half time, after a six-goal to three quarter, the difference was back to a manageable 17 points with the momentum slightly favouring the Roos.

Although Dixon kicked the first major of the third quarter for the Suns, that momentum shift towards North continued, and goals to Majak Daw and Aaron Black saw the lead cut back to just five points at the 17-minute mark. Not long after, Greenwood had a flying shot that would have given North the lead but his shot hit the 'woodwork'. That narrow missed seemed to be a catalyst for Gold Coast. The Suns kicked the final two goals of the term via Bennell and Dixon to restore a three-goal break at the last change of ends, before Gary Ablett set them alight with the first two goals of the last quarter.

The Suns would go on to kick five goals to one for the term and record a highly meritorious seven-goal victory against a side considered to be 'top-four' material. The win takes Gold Coast to a 5-2 record, equal with fourth-placed Collingwood, and with their next two encounters against St Kilda and the Bulldogs (after a bye next week), the Suns could be 7-2 and firmly inside the top four within the next three weeks. As always, Ablett (28 disposals and four goals) was outstanding for them, as were Prestia (28 touches and a goal) and Tom Lynch (8 marks, 21 possessions, two goals).

Meanwhile North's Jekyll and Hyde season continues, with wins against high-quality opposition being countered by losses to unfancied teams. The Roos have a bye next weekend, before taking on Brisbane (Docklands) and Geelong (Kardinia Park) in rounds nine and ten.
