Match Report

Geelong held off a fast-finishing Richmond at a sodden MCG on Sunday to record a five-point win that keeps the Cats in the top four. The Cats had earlier kicked the first five goals of the match, with Richmond not scoring its first major until time-on in the second quarter. But when spearhead Jack Riewoldt broke the goal drought at the 22-minute mark, it heralded a mini-flood of Tiger goals.

Within the next six minutes, Brett Deledio, Sam Lloyd and Dustin Martin had all added goals of their own, broken up by one major from Cat Jordan Murdoch, and Richmond, which had trailed by 35 points minutes earlier, was suddenly within 17. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Mitch Duncan kicked one right on the half-time siren to give Geelong a 23-point buffer at the long break.

As the rain continued to tumble as it had for most of the afternoon, Richmond kicked the first goal of the third quarter through Shane Edwards to cut the margin back to three goals, and when Sam Lloyd kicked his second at the 15-minute mark, that difference was reduced to 13 points. With Geelong struggling to get the ball forward, the Tigers attacked relentlessly and were finally rewarded with a goal to Ty Vickery at the 23-minute mark to bring Richmond with seven points.

The margin remained at seven at the last break, with Richmond desperate to get the first major of the final term. It did not pan out that way unfortunately for the Tigers, with Geelong's skipper Joel Selwood shrugging off a tackle and kicking the Cats' first goal since the second quarter at the three-minute mark.

But the Tigers refused to go away. Skipper Cotchin goaled at the eight-minute mark to reduce the difference to a goal. Geelong then appeared to settle, goals to Murdoch and Taylor Hunt taking the Cats back out to a 13-point buffer. But Vickery gave the Tigers hope with a goal at the 17-minute mark. After several Cat behinds, the Tigers challenged once more with a goal to Riewoldt cutting the margin to 11. Richmond attacked relentlessly for the final three minutes of the game but couldn't quite find the composure the top the work off with goals. A final major to Lloyd cut the final margin to five points but the four match points went to Geelong, leaving the Cats in the top three with six wins from seven matches and the Tigers languishing in 13th place on the ladder with just two victories.

Best for the Cats included Murdoch (18 disposals and two goals), Mitch Duncan (two goals and 21 possessions) and Matthew Stokes (30 touches and eight marks), while the Tigers were well-served by Alex Rance in defence, Daniel Jackson (34 disposals) and Brett Deledio (23 touches and a goal).

Both sides will have a bye in round nine, after which Geelong will travel to Subiaco to take on Fremantle, and Richmond will meet co-tenants Melbourne at the MCG.
