Match Report

Sydney has overcome poor kicking for goal and a depleted Hawthorn outfit to record its fifth victory of 2014 and stake a top-four claim. Lance "Buddy" Franklin's first match against his former side looked like being one to forget for much of the night as the tall spearhead's shots at goal continually went wide. By three-quarter time, Franklin had seven behinds - but not a single goal - to his name, and the Swans, who had held sway for much of the night, were three points behind the Hawks. But "Buddy" and the Swans finally straightened up in the last term, with Franklin's two goals helping Sydney to a 19-point win.

The Swans had earlier got the jump on Hawthorn, who were missing key players Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Brian Lake though injury - with two goals to Kurt Tippett - playing his first match for the season - and another to Kieran Jack, helping Sydney to a 21-point lead after just 11 minutes. Grant Birchall finally got the Hawks on the board at the 15-minute mark, and Hawthorn managed to be within striking distance of Sydney at the first break, trailing by 18 points.

As Sydney continued to miss gettable opportunities, kicking 2.4, the Hawks worked their way right back into the match in the second quarter, goals to Paul Puopolo, Jonathan Simpkin, Luke Breust and Davis Hale enabling them to close the gap to to seven points - 6.12 to 6.5 - at the long break.

The third quarter could not have started in worse fashion for Hawthorn. A minute into the term speedster Cyril Rioli pulled up short with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and was substituted out of the match - replaced by second-gamer Billy Hartung - a couple of minutes later. Despite the setback, the Hawks had the better of the quarter, kicking 5.2 for the quarter while the Swans maintained their inaccuracy with 3.4. But just before the end of the term, Josh Gibson added to the Hawks' injury woes he damaged a shoulder contesting a mark.

Trailing by three points at the last break, the Swans finally began to find the major target early in the final term, with two goals from Franklin and another from Nick Malceski - a beautiful snap from the boundary - helping Sydney out to a 16-point lead. But the injury-riddled Hawks would not go away. Jarryd Roughead kicked two goals in quick succession and the brown and gold were back within a goal at the 15-minute mark. But it was to be Hawthorn's last hurrah, with goals to Jarrad McVeigh, Daniel Hannebery and Lewis Jetta seeing the Swans home to a 19-point win.

Dan Hannebery was magnificent for Sydney, with 40 disposals and six tackles, while Josh Kennedy (36 touches and 10 tackles) and Luke Parker (26 possessions and six tackles) also had great games. For Hawthorn, Roughead (three goals, six tackles) and Peter Burgoyne (28 disposals) were influential.

With so many injuries to contend with, Hawthorn will welcome next week's bye before they travel to the Adelaide Oval to take on Port Adelaide in round 10. The Swans will face Essendon at Docklands next Saturday before they have a week off in round 10.

COACHES' COMMENTS
John Longmire (Syd): There's still a long way to go. We felt a month ago when we played Fremantle that our pressure was back and once we get that element of our game right, it helps us play the sort of footy we want to play. I thought our first quarter today was really good as far as pressure goes. You got to apply pressure to any team, especially Hawthorn. We thought in that first quarter our pressure was absolutely top-notch.

Alastair Clarkson (Haw): We were pretty ordinary tonight. Sydney were a lot more fanatical at the contest then what we were. We were lucky to still be in the contest at quarter time. We clawed our way back into it and worked pretty hard. We had our chances in the second and third quarters but Sydney were the better side on the night by far.
