Match Report

Fremantle was made to work hard in its match against the Western Bulldogs at Docklands on Sunday, but ultimately proved two strong and polished for the developing Dogs, winning by 38 points in a game from which both sides could take positives. Given the current reputations of both teams, the result was probably as predictable as any of the round 11 matches played over the weekend. The Bulldogs are a team in "build" mode, renowned for being able to win the ball often enough but unable to finish off good midfield work in the forward line. In contrast, the Dockers thrive on winning the ball in defence and scoring on the counterattack.

And that's exactly how the game played out for most of its duration. The Bulldogs dominated possession in the first term in particular, the ball spending much of its time in the Dogs' forward half but intense pressure from the Dockers, combined with poor disposal on numerous occasions from the Bulldogs, saw a reward of just 1.4 for the quarter. In contrast, Fremantle scored - relatively easily - almost every time it forayed forward, and the Dockers had 4.2 on the board at the first break.

The second term played out in a similar fashion, although the Bulldogs did not dominate possession quite as much, and the Dockers again kicked four goals to one for the quarter to take a 31-point lead into the long break.

Continued pressure around the ball finally saw the Dogs get reward in the third quarter, as they kicked 3.4 to 1.3 to cut the margin back to an even three goals at the last change of ends and provide their fans with hope of an upset victory. But it was not to be. The final term was a carbon copy of the first two, with Fremantle using the ball far more efficiently when it had it, kicking four goals to one for the quarter, just as it had done in the first two, to run out comfortable winners.

Stephen Hill was magnificent for the Dockers, with 24 possessions and four goals, while Michael Barlow (10 marks, 28 disposals) and Paul Duffield (eight tackles, 21 touches) were also excellent. The Dogs were well served by Tom Liberatore (31 disposals, 10 tackles) and Bob Murphy (11 marks, 30 possessions).

The Bulldogs will look to get back on the winners list next Saturday night at Docklands when they take on bottom-placed Brisbane, while the Dockers will look to consolidate their place in the top eight and push for a place in the top four when they host Adelaide on Sunday.
