Match Report

Geelong has recovered from its stunning 110-point round 11 thrashing at the hands of Sydney to defeat Carlton - just - at Docklands stadium on Friday night. Th Cats could not shake the Blues all night and appeared headed for a rare second consecutive defeat until a last-minute goal from inspirational skipper Joel Selwood got them over the line.

A relatively even first term saw the Blues ahead by under a goal deep into the quarter but a late major to Jeff Garlett gave Carlton a nine-point buffer at the first change. The Blues then made the earlier running in the second quarter, a goal to Robbie Warnock taking the margin out to 15 points in the first two minutes, but Geelong then hit its straps and three goals to big Tom Hawkins and another to Matthew Stokes saw the Cats 10 points ahead at the 15-minute mark. The two sides traded goals for the most of the remainder of the term until Hawkins kicked another after the siren to put Geelong 19 points clear at the long break.

After an early third-term goal to Blue Troy Menzel, the Cats assumed control in general play and goals to Jordan Murdoch and another to Andrew Mackie had Geelong out to a 24-point lead and seemingly in control of the match. The game then underwent a complete and utterly unexpected transformation. The Cats did not register a score of any description in the next 30 minutes of play. In the same period the Blues added 6.4 and at the 12-minute mark of the last term led by 16 points and looked to be heading towards victory.

Then, as suddenly as it had stopped, Geelong clicked back into gear. A goal to Murdoch cut the Blues' lead back to 10 and the Cats regained their spark. Stokes kicked another at the 17-minute mark to reduce the margin to four points and then peppered the goals but kept missing and behinds to James Kelly, Cameron Guthrie and Tom Lonergan saw Carlton just one point clear at the 23-minute mark. Bryce Gibbs, playing a great game, gave the Blues breathing space with a goal at the 24-minute mark but George Horlin-Smih reignited hope for the Cats with a major three minutes later, reducing the match once more to a one-poinr game.

Geelong skipper Selwood then made his move, swooping on the ball from a stoppage and snapping truly too give the Cats a five-point lead. From the resultant centre-bounce, the Blues willed the ball forward. Several ball-ups ensued and at one of those, with seconds left on the clock and the ball mere metres from Carlton's goal, the Geelong runner Nigel Lappin controversially appeared to impede the run of Blue Mitch Robinson. No free kick was paid and the siren sounded soon after, giving the Cats a heart-stopping win.

Hawkins (four goals and 10 marks) and Stokes (three goals and 22 touches) were magnificent for the Cats, while Carlton's Bryce Gibbs (four goals, 19 disposals) played perhaps the best match of his career.

The win sees the Cats fifth on the ladder, equal with second-placed Hawthorn but with a poor percentage of just 101.7, largely due to their huge loss to Sydney the week before. They will host St Kilda at Kardinia Park next Sunday. For the Blues, the loss leaves them three games adrift of the top eight in 12th place, a place in the finals now little more than a pipe dream. Another tough encounter awaits them this Friday night - Hawthorn at the MCG.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Chris Scott (Geel): It was a gutsy win. It was a win that we were fortunate to get, I think. We played well enough to get ourselves into a position where we should have had control of the game and then looked like we lost it. Good players in big moments hang in there and [Joel] Selwood finishing off is kind of what we've come to expect from him, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I think we were pretty fortunate.

Mick Malthouse (Carl): I was reasonably happy with the ability of players to play with greater passion than last week and a lot more urgency. We're disappointed that we lost. We'll be taking up certain [umpiring] issues that we'd like clarification on.
