Match Report

As was expected by all but the most die-hard of Saints fans, Port Adelaide made relatively short work of St Kilda in Saturday's twilight game at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

With the sun shining brightly on the ground, the Power very much "on" defensively in the early stages of the match, allowing the Saints to register just two behinds for the first 27 minutes of the match, while kicking four of their own via Chad Wingard, Robbie Gray, Jared Polec and Jackson Trengove to take a 24-point lead. But Saint skipper sparked his team with two goals just before the quarter-time siren and St Kilda trailed by just 13 points at the first change.

Both defences stood firm for the first half of the second term, both sides managing only behinds until the 17-minute mark, at which point Josh Saunders gratefully marked a poor kick out of defence by Hamish Hartlett and converted to leave the Saints only six points adrift of the top team on the ladder. Five minutes later young Terry Milera goaled again for St Kilda to level the scores and a major upset suddenly loomed large.

However, Port suddenly clicked into gear in the last five minutes of the term and kicked three quick goals to settle the nerves of Power fans and go into half time with a 19-point lead. Sadly that was where St Kilda's resistance ended. The Power came out flying in the third quarter, kicking six unanswered goals, including one from Wingard following what most consider to be the mark of the year so far, and charging to a 59-point lead. A late goal from Lenny Hayes prevented the quarter from being a whitewash but Port was nine goals to the good at the last change.

It was more of the same from the Power in the last term as the booted six goals to four to extend the final margin to 70 points and maintain a two-game buffer at the head of the ladder. One highlight for the Saints in the final quarter was Nick Riewoldt's third goal, which was the 600th of his career, putting him 30th on the all-time list of goalkickers.

Best for the Power included Robbie Gray (four goals and 25 disposals) and Hartlett (36 possessions, eight marks), while for the Saints veterans Riewoldt (four goals and 11 marks) and Lenny Hayes (26 disposals and seven tackles) had fine games.

The Power will travel to the SCG on Saturday for a blockbuster match against third-placed Sydney, while St Kilda, which has slipped to 17th on the ladder have another tough assignment against Geelong at Kardinia Park next Sunday. The Saints lost the corresponding match last season by an even 100 points.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ken Hinkley (Port): We were defensively really good tonight. One of the areas that we were focussing on going into the game was that we wanted to get back defending somewhere near our best and tonight, credit to the boys, they were able to do that.

Alan Richardson (StK): Our ability to rebound, particularly after half time was not there. We didn't help ourselves. Some of our execution was pretty sloppy. They were very strong defensively. We've got a group of players that can do it but they just didn't execute tonight. We'll get better in that area.
