Match Report

Carlton made short work of St Kilda at Docklands on Sunday afternoon, thrashing the Saints by 85 points to arrest a five-game losing streak. Apart from a brief period in the second term, the Blues dominated the match at all times, condemning St Kilda to its 10th loss in a row and making Saint coach Alan Richardson's first season at the helm the stuff of nightmares.

The Blues were on song from the word go, Andrejs Everitt kicking the Blues' first at the three-minute mark and Carlton then added five more for the term to St Kilda's two to lead by 26 points at quarter time. There was more of the same to come early in the second quarter as Everitt, Chris Judd and Troy Menzel all added goals in the space of six minutes to take the margin out to 44 points and a massacre was looming for the Saints. The game then suddenly changed complexion entirely. St Kilda found some confidence and began to run. The Saints kicked five of the next six goals and were amazingly within 15 points at the long break with the momentum seemingly with them.

Sadly for the Saints, that momentum dissolved as soon as the third quarter began. Carlton regained its composure and began to put St Kilda to the sword. The Blues added seven goals to two to take a 49-point lead into the last break, and things unfortunately did not improve for the Saints in the final term. Carlton added another seven goals in the final quarter and the Saints only one, the Blues ultimately triumphing by more than 14 goals.

Carlton has good players all over the ground, including Everitt (13 marks, 23 disposals) and Andrew Walker (10 marks, 28 touches) while for the Saints David Armitage (24 possessions and five marks) and Nick Riewoldt (three goals, 19 disposals) tried valiantly across all four quarters.

The win takes the Blues up to 14th on the ladder, still four games away from the top eight, while the Saints are languishing at the base of the ladder with just two wins. Carlton's next assignment will be new top side Sydney at the SCG, while St Kilda will look to crack it for an unlikely win against North Melbourne at Bellerive Oval in Hobart next Saturday.
