Match Report

While the 2014 season has been one of significant improvement for Melbourne under the tutelage of new coach Paul Roos, Saturday night's match against Geelong was not a game which demonstrated as much. The Demons were comprehensively outplayed by the Cats for most of the match at the MCG, particularly in the first half when the Cats kicked 11 goals to two to open up a 59-point lead at the long break. Melbourne managed to rein in Geelong's scoring in the second half but could make little impact of its own on the scoreboard, ultimately succumbing by 66 points.

The danger signs were there early for the Demons, with Cat Tom Hawkins scoring the game's first goal at the two-minute mark, although Melbourne were able to stifle Geelong's attack for 15 minutes after that major before Allen Christensen kicked the Cats' second. Geelong attacked relentless after that, for a reward of no more than six consecutive games before Shane Kersten kicked his first at the 29-minute mark to put Geelong 23 points clear at the first break.

Having managed 3.7 in the first term, Geelong found its accuracy in the second quarter, which spelled bad news for Melbourne. The Cats slammed on 8.3, including two more to Hawkins and the first AFL goal for third-gamer Brad Hartman, while the Demons could manage only two for the term, both via Jeremy Howe.

Trailing by virtually 10 goals at half-time, the Demons did manage to slow the Cats down in the third quarter. While managing only two goals of their own, through Cam Pedersen and Dean Kent, they were able to restrict Geelong to just 1.3, the only major going to Stevie Johnson. Melbourne finished up winning the term and the margin was 55 points at the final change. Kent added another goal at the 22-minute mark of the final term but that was the Demons' only score of the last term. The wasteful Cats added 2.5 in the same period and coasted home to win by an even 11 goals.

Joel Selwood (31 possessions, six tackles) and Steven Motlop (26 touches and a goal) were outstanding for the Cats. while Aiden Riley (17 disposals. seven tackles) and Jeremy Howe (21 possessions, two goals) played encouraging games for Melbourne.

The Cats are in fourth position on the ladder after that win, one game clear of Port Adelaide which had a shock loss to Richmond on Sunday, and will have a chance to cement that place when they travel to the Sydney Showground to take on GWS next Saturday. Melbourne, 16th on the table with a 4-12 record, will meet the Power next Sunday at the Adelaide Oval, the scene of a famous Demon win over the Crows earlier this season.
