Match Report

The Western Bulldogs first-ever home match at Cairns has proved successful, with the Dogs scoring an upset win over Gold Coast at Cazaly's Stadium, knocking the Suns out of the top eight in the process. The Dogs started the match off well, suffered a lapse in the second quarter, slightly outscored the Suns in a low-scoring third term, and then blew Gold Coast away with a series of running goals in the final quarter.

Gold Coast dominated the early proceedings of the match but could only manage a return of 1.3 in a 10-minute period where it clearly held the upper hand. The Dogs then settled with a goal to Lachie Hunter at the 13-minute mark and then took their turn to dominate, and with a more devastating scoreboard impact. Jason Johannisen, Jack Redpath, Luke Dahlhaus and Stewart Crameri all added goals over the next 12 minutes as the Western Bulldogs took a 21-point lead before a late goal to Jaeger O'Meara reduced the margin to 16 points at quarter time. The Suns turned things around in the second term as scoring chances dried up for the Bulldogs. Charlie Dixon, Tom Lyncj, Harley Bennell and O'Meara all added goals for the Suns while the Bulldogs could manage just four behinds for the term and Gold Coast went into the long break with a seven-point lead.

Having had a similar half-time lead when they met at Carrara earlier in the year, the Suns had blown the Dogs away in the third term in that match but the Western Bulldogs showed a much steelier resolve this time around as they restricted Gold Coast to just 1.2 for the quarter and added 2.7 of their own. At the final change of ends, the Bulldogs held a slender two-point advantage and it looked to be anybody's game. The Suns began the last quarter with a goal Tom Lynch, giving them a four-point lead and questions were raised about whether the Dogs could stop a last-quarter Gold Coast onslaught. But in the face of that, the Bulldogs completely turned things around and slammed on the next six goals to close the door on the Suns. The charge was led by the Dogs' youth brigade with Jack Macrae kicking two of the six goals and Hunter, Jake Stringer, Nathan Hrovat and Tom Liberatore kicking the others. Charlie Dixon ended the match as he had started it, with a goal for the Suns but the damage had been well done by then as the Bulldogs coasted to an impressive 28-point victory.

Macrae was magnificent for the Dogs, collecting 43 possessions, an AFL record for a 19-year-old, while Hrovat (27 disposals, five marks) and veteran Matthew Boyd (31 touches and six marks) also had great games. For the Suns, O'Meara (nine tackles, 22 possessions), Dion Prestia (22 disposals, four tackles) and David Swallow (20 touches and three tackles) all had good games.

The loss leaves the Suns precariously placed in ninth position on the ladder, behind Essendon and Collingwood on percentage. They will look to return to the winners list and the eight when they take on Brisbane at the Gabba after having next weekend off. The Dogs now have a 6-10 record a two-game improvement on the same stage last year, and will go into next Sunday's match against Essendon with confidence.
