Match Report

Bottom-placed St Kilda caused the upset of the season at Docklands on Saturday afternoon, thrashing second-placed Fremantle by 58 points. Though Saints started the match strongly, there was an air of expectation throughout the first half, and even early in the second, that the Dockers would click into gear overall the deficit and run away from the "cellar dwellers". But that did not happen. St Kilda outscored Fremantle easily in the first three quarters, and though the Dockers won the last term by 10 points, it was far too little and far too late.

Though the match got off to the worst possible start for St Kilda, with Sean Dempster substituted after just seven minutes with concussion, all other early signs were good for the Saints, with skipper Nick Riewoldt scoring the Saints' first goal after a defensive period saw neither team score a major until the eight-minute mark. Brodie Murdoch kicked the Saints second eight minutes later and Luke Dunstan and Rhys Stanley added further goals before the Dockers at last got their first via Chris Mayne just before quarter time.

The second term saw St Kilda go on its merry way, the shellshocked Fremantle conceding five goals for the quarter, two of those to Stanley and could add only two of its own, leaving the Dockers an amazing 40 points adrift at the long break. When the third quarter began, the expectation of a Docker comeback was high. But David Armitage kicked the first goal of the second half after two minutes, and although Docker captain responded with a goal for Fremantle three minutes later, there was to be no stopping St Kilda in this match. The Saints kicked five of the remaining six goals of the term and led by a massive 68 points at the final change.

With the last quarter little more than a formality, the Dockers added 4.0 to 2.2 for the term but the day truly belong to the young Saints as they coasted to a win by just two points shy of 10 goals. While St Kilda had defeated the Dockers in a similar fashion at the same venue in round 23 last year, Fremantle had rested 10 of its players in the lead up to the finals in that match. This time the Saints pounded a Dockers team that was close to full strength, notwithstanding the absence of ruckman Aaron Sandilands and the suspended Hayden Ballantyne.

Chief architects of the Saints' win were Nick Riewoldt, who between them took 30 marks, had 49 possessions and kicked seven goals. Ex-Hawk Shane Savage also played his best match for the Saints, with 30 touches. Michael Barlow (24 possessions, six marks) Paul Duffield (nine tackles, 21 disposals) tried hard all day for Fremantle.

The loss sees the Dockers slip from second to fifth on the ladder. They will look to push back into the top four with a won over Carlton on Friday week. The big wasn't quite enough to lift St Kilda off the bottom of the ladder. The Saints have four wins, along with 15th, 16th and 17th-placed teams GWS, Melbourne and Brisbane but have the lowest percentage of the four. They will meet Gold Coast at Carrara after having next weekend off.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Alan Richardson (StK): That was a fantastic performance. We though last week was a step in the right direction. We didn't maximise our opportunities against the Kangaroos after quarter time, though we played some pretty good footy. We're slowly getting a bit of experience back into the group and slowly buy surely there's a bit more synergy between players.

ROSS LYON (Frem): We played a very good opposition today. They were first to the ball; they spread really well. We couldn't get to them. They used it really well. We certainly weren't at our best today but they played very, very well. Credit to the opposition. I thought they were really well led by Nick Riewoldt, and Hayes and Armitage were terrific.
