Match Report
The season of Gold Coast hangs by a thread after the Suns succumbed to Carlton by 39 points at Docklands on Saturday afternoon. The Blues took control of the match in the first term and then blew the Suns away with a seven-goal-to-three second quarter to lead by 46 points at the long break, more or less protecting that lead in a low-scoring second half.
Chris Judd got the Blues off to the best possible start with goal in the first minute of the match, with Jarrad Waite, Tom Bell and Dale Thomas adding further goals to set up a 19-point quarter time lead. Jarrad Waite dominated the second quarter with three goals of his own as Carlton added seven goals to three to break the back of the Suns and set up a lead of almost eight goals at half time.
The Suns reorganised their structure in the third quarter and this was successful to the point of cutting back Carlton's scoring dramatically. The Blues managed just one major for the term, but Gold Coast's problem was that it could not make a scoreboard impact of its own, the Suns also scoring only a solitary goal for the quarter. It was a similar story in the last quarter, the Suns restricting Carlton to just two goals, but adding only three of their own as the Blues recorded a comfortable 39-point win.
Judd was back to his best, with 27 touches band two goals, and announced after the match that he would be playing on in 2015. Waite (five goals, nine marks) and Bryce Gibbs (28 touches and six marks) were also outstanding for Carlton while for the Suns, David Swallow (10 tackles, 19 possessions) and Jaeger O'Meara (26 disposals six marks) played fine matches.
The Suns' fate remains largely in their own hands. With matches against Port Adelaide, Essendon and West Coast to come, victory in all three games would virtually guarantee Gold Coast its first finals appearance. Carlton are out of finals' contention, but the Blues will look for a strong finish to the season in their matches against Geelong, Port Adelaide and Essendon.
