Match Report

In a battle of the "also-rans", the GWS Giants have scored a convincing win over a disappointing Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday. The Demons looked to have shown significant improvement under the coaching of Paul Roos in the early part of 2014 but they have now lost their last eight games and the loss to the Giants was a low point, not because it was against the Giants but because of Melbourne's inability to hit targets and put together any constructive attacking moves. The Demons finished the match with just three goals, just one of those coming after quarter tine.

On the other hand, GWS could be well pleased with its efforts, as the Giants lost skipper Callan Ward and big forward Jonathan Patton before half time, but still managed to run away with the match after the long break, kicking nine goals to one to win by 64 points, the biggest winning margin in the Giants' short history.

Dylan Smith (31 disposals, 10 marks) was brilliant for the Giants, with Shane Mumford (21 hitouts and a goal) and Josh Kelly (27 touches and nine marks) also playing fine games.

The Giants have a 5-15 record and will give themselves a good chance of winning both of their last two games, against Collingwood at home and the Western Bulldogs. Melbourne has slipped back to 17th place, ahead of St Kilda only by percentage and face tough matches against West Coast at Subiaco and North Melbourne at Docklands to close out another disappointing year.
