Match Report

West Coast made short work of Melbourne at Subiaco on Saturday night to keep its chances of participating in this year's finals series well and truly alive. The match was more or less decided by quarter time after the Eagles kicked six goals to one to lead by 30 points at quarter time. A relatively even second term saw that lead extended slightly to 38 at half time, but West Coast reasserted its dominance in the third quarter to lead by 71 points at the last break. The Demons, to their credit, fought out the game after that, winning the last quarter and the final margin was 66 points in the Eagles' favour.

Mark Le Cras led tee way for the Eagles, with eight marks and four goals, while Chris Masten (32 disposals, nine marks) and Andrew Gaff (29 possessions and seven tackles) were also outstanding. For the Demons, Bernie Vince (34 touches and three tackles), Nathan Jones (29 disposals, five tackles) and Jeremy Howe (21 possessions and a goal) all flew the flag.

A win against the Gold Coast Suns next Sunday will be enough to see the Eagles enter the top eight, provided top team Sydney defeats Richmond on Saturday. Melbourne, languishing in second-last place on the ladder with a 4-17 record, will see out its season with a match against North Melbourne next Sunday at Docklands, a venue at which the Demons have now lost 19 games on end.
