Match Report

North Melbourne recorded a comfortable five-goal win against Melbourne in an entertaining game against Melbourne on Saturday night at Docklands stadium. The match meant little to the Kangaroos in terms of ladder placement, with sixth place already locked in for them.

An even first term saw the two sides locked on 4.3 at quarter time and things did not change much in the second. Each side added 4.2 for the quarter and at half time the scoreboard had both sides on 8.5.53. It was in the third term that North made the decisive break of the match. The Roos restricted Melbourne to just one goal, while adding five of their own, two of those to debutant Mason Wood. The final quarter was another free-flowing affair, with North outscoring the Demons six goals to five to run out victors by 30 points.

Andrew Swallow (eight tackles, 212 disposals), Shaun Atley (21 possessions, five marks) and Kayne Turner (four goals, five tackles) were amongst North's best, while Melbourne was well served by Dom Tyson (24 possessions, seven marks), Dean Kent (three goals) and Nathan Jones (27 touches and six tackles). Jones went on to win the Demons best and fairest, his third, later in the week.

Secure in sixth place, the Kangaroos will face Essendon in an Elimination Final next Saturday night at the MCG. The two sides last met in round one, with the Bombers scoring an emphatic 39-point win.

Melbourne's season comes to a close with only four wins to its credit (two more than in 2013), but there are signs of improvement under coach Paul Roos.
