Match Report

The Adelaide Crows came into round 23 with high hopes of sneaking into the finals on the back of a big win against St Kilda on Sunday but by the time this match commenced that hope had evaporated after a thrilling win by Richmond over Sydney the previous day saw the Tigers take the last available place in the top eight. Nevertheless, the Crows did record a big win, defeating the Saints 79 points to finish the season on a high and send off the retiring Ben Rutten in style.

St Kilda opened the match the stronger of the two teams, with two of the first three goals but Adelaide had settled in and taken control of the match by quarter time, at which point it led 4.2 to 2.2. The Crows "sealed the deal" with a big second quarter, adding seven goals to just one from the Saints, and took a 50-point lead into the long break.

The Saints played their best footy of the day in the third quarter, kicking 5.4 to Adelaide's 4.0 and at three-quarter time were within 40 points. But Adelaide powered away in the last term, replicating the second quarter by again kicking seven goals to one and running out winners by more than 13 goals.

Best for the Crows included Rory Sloane (30 disposals, nine marks), Brodie Smith (34 possessions and five marks) and Sam Jacobs (49 hitouts, 14 disposals), while St Kilda was well served by Sam Fisher (28 disposals, eight marks), Jack Steven (30 touches and four marks) and Lenny Hayes who, in his 297th and last AFL match had 21 disposals and laid 13 tackles, taking his career total to 1496, the highest of any player in AFL history.

The Crows finish the season in 10th position, one game out of the eight, while St Kilda's season of just four wins saw it take out its first wooden spoon since 2000.
