Match Report

Greater Western Sydney has finished off a season of improvement with a thrilling and morale-boosting win over the Western Bulldogs on Sunday. In a good old-fashioned "shoot-out", the Giants jumped the Dogs earlier, surrendered the lead but finished the game off with a late goal that saw them sneak home by six points. It was a fine send-off for the retiring Josh Hunt but a bitter way for the also retiring Daniel Giansiracusa to end his 265-game career.

The Giants had much the better of the early stages of the match, kicking the first three goals before the Dogs clicked into gear, adding two of the last three of the term. At quarter time, GWS led 4.0 to 2.4. The Giants then dominated the second quarter, kicking six goals to three to lead by 26 points at the long break, with the Bulldogs facing a very sour end to a season of little profess.

But sparked perhaps by thoughts of sending off "Gia" in style, the Dogs rallied in the third term, kicking 6.6 to 2.2, and they led at the final change by two points. That lead could have been more but the Bulldogs squandered several shots in front of goal, at that stage having had 25 scoring shots to 18. The momentum swung both ways in the final term, the Bulldogs getting the first goal to lead by nine but the Giants kicking the next three to take  a 14 point lead into time-on.

The Dogs mounted one final challenge, adding two behinds and goals via Marcus Bontempelli and Stewart Crameri. Giansiracusa then had two chances to put the Dogs ahead but two difficult chances both sailed out of bounds. Finally the Dogs looked like they would seal the match but a beautiful pass to Jake Stringer bounced straight off his chest and the Giants swept the ball to the other end, with Devon Smith capping off victory with a lovely running goal that broke the hearts of all Western Bulldogs players and fans.

Toby Greene (32 disposals, eight marks) and Will Hoskin-Elliott (five goals, six marks) were brilliant for the Giants, while Ryan Griffen (38 possessions, six marks) and Bob Murphy (24 disposals, seven marks) excellent for the Bulldogs.

For the Giants, 2014 was their best season yet, six wins bettering their 2012 and 2013 totals of two wins and one win. The Dogs finished 13th, one place higher than last year but with one less win. Significant improvement will be expected of them next season.
