Match Report

Geelong has finally made it to the winners list in 2015, courtesy of a brave effort to hold out a finishing Gold Coast Suns by nine points in a thrilling encounter at Kardinia Park on Sunday. The performance was notably brave because the Cats had lost Jimmy Bartel, Matthew Stokes and Tom Lonergan through the afternoon and finished the match with just 19 fit men and a very limited ability to rotate off the bench.

The first term was a high scoring affair with both sides holding sway at different moments. Geelong kicked the first two goals of the match via youngsters Josh Walker and Darcy Lang but Gold Coast responded with majors to Jack Martin and Jarrod Garlett. Steven Motlop goaled to put the Cats back in front but the Suns then got on a roll, with consecutive goals to Tom Lynch, Martin and Lynch again putting them 14 points ahead. Geelong responded with goals to Jackson Thurlow and Walker but Aaron Hall closed out the quarter with a goal that put the Suns eight points clear at the first change, by which stage the Cats had lost Bartel to a knee injury and Stokes to an ankle problem.

Gold Coast kicked off the second term with a goal to Michael Rischitelli inside the first minute but goals to Mitch Clarke and Walker saw Geelong back within a goal as the quarter entered time on. That time-on period saw both sides add several behinds, with the one major scored going to Brandon Matera, putting the Suns an even two goals clear at the long break.

When play resumed in the third term, Geelong seized the initiative and took control of the match. Walker kicked his fourth and further goals to Josh Caddy (two), Steve Johnson, Joel Selwood and Corey Gregson saw the Cats jump to a 26-point lead late in the quarter. But the Suns began to turn things around in the last few minutes and added 1.3 to cut the difference to 17 points and take some momentum into the last break. Just before the three-quarter time siren Longeran sustained a knock to the head and sustained concussion which meant he would take no further part in the match.

Down to just one fit man on the bench, Geelong’s last quarter task was significant, and when Sam Day goaled for the Suns a minute in, it looked as if Gold Coast might have the whwrewithal to run over the top of the Cats. But Corey Gregson goaled to restore a three-goal buffer and give Cats fans hope that their team could hang. The Suns kept coming, though, and goals to Touk Miller and Matera, along with three behinds saw Geelong only three points ahead as the final term entered time on. A Motlop goal gave the Cats breathing space before Martin kicked his third for the Suns and cut the difference back to three points once more. The Cats defended grimly before a final foray forward saw Mark Blicavs mark and goal to give Geelong a nail-biting nine-point win.

Best for the wounded Cats included skipper Joel Selwood (38 disposals, six tackles), whose second half in particular was magnificent, James Kelly (27 touches, five tackles) and Corey Enright (23 possessions and eight marks. For the Suns, Rischitelli (27 disposals, five tackles) and Tom Lynch (three goals and 19 possessions) were excellent.

Geelong will look to make it two in a row when it hosts North Melbourne at Kardinia Park next Sunday, while the winless Suns will take on GWS at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Saturday.
