Match Report

Saturday night's match at Subiaco between Fremantle and Sydney was a classic "game of two halves", with one side dominating for two terms and building a huge lead and then the other taking control of the last two quarters, turning the finish into a thrilling affair. (By coincidence, Saturday night's other game between Port Adelaide and Hawthorn followed the same script.) In this case it was the Dockers who jumped out of the blocks to build a 48-point half time lead. The Swans then reversed the roles in the second half and got to within three points of Fremantle before two late goals saw the Dockers home by 14 points.

The Dockers attacked from the start in the first term, although it was seven minutes before a goal was scored. That went to skipper Matthew Pavlich, and then Clancee Pearce and Nick Suban fooled up with majors at the 11 and 13-minute marks. The scoreless Swans finally hit the scoreboard with a goal to Lance Franklin but a late goal to Chris Mayne saw Fremantle in front 4.2 to 1.1 at quarter time.

Fremantle's dominance of the second quarter was utter and complete. Sydney's attacked was virtually paralysed, the Swans return for the entire term being two behinds to Franklin. The Dockers meanwhile added 5.1, with goals to Nat Fyfe, Zac Clarke, Matthew Taberner, Pavlich and Cameron Sutcliffe. At the long break, they led by 48 points and a 100-point thrashing did not appear to be beyond the realms of possibility.

Whatever the words spoken to Sydney's players by coach John Longmire at half time, they worked magnificently. The third quarter saw the Swans dominance almost as complete as Fremantle's had been the term before. The Dockers managed only a single behind to Fyfe, while Sydney added 4.5, with majors to Lewis Jetta, Franklin, Luke Parker and Kurt Tippett. By three-quarter time the margin was back to 20 points and, such was Sydney's momentum, a Swans victory did not seem out of the question.

The Swans continued their push when the last quarter begin. Gary Rohan goaled within the first minute and when Tippet kicked his second two minutes later the margin was just eight points with virtually a full quarter to play. Michael Walters and Fyfe added behinds for the Dockers, as did Parker for Sydney and then Jake Lloyd made the difference just three points with a goal for the Swans at the 12-minute mark. At that point, it looked like Sydney would finish over the top of Fremantle but the Dockers steeled themselves and dug in. They restricted the Swans to only three more behinds and goals to Pavlich and Chris Mayne saw them home by 14 points in an epic struggle.

The Dockers were inspired by Fyfe who had 27 disposals and laid six tackles, while Lee Spurr (11 marks, 21 possessions) and Stephen Hill (21 touches, four tackles) were also very good. For Sydney, Sam Reid (11 marks, 22 possessions), Dan Hannebery (31 touches and five tackles) and Jarrad McVeigh (nine tackles, 23 disposals) were excellent.

Fremantle sit atop the ladder, having won its first four games of the season for the first time in its 21-year existence. The Dockers will meet Melbourne at the MCG next Sunday. The Swans, in fourth place with a 3-1 record) will host the rejuvenated Western Bulldogs (also 3-1) at the SCG on Saturday afternoon.
