Match Report

A big last quarter from the Sydney Swans have given them their fifth win of the season as they prevailed by 43 points over Geelong at Stadium Australia on Saturday night. The Cats put up a good fight in the first half to lead by nine points at the long break, and they were still within five points at the last change but the more experienced Sydney outfit broke away with seven goals to one I'm the last quarter to record a comfortable win.

An entertaining first term saw Geelong draw first blood with a goal to the versatile Mark Blicavs at the three-minute mark before the Swans hit the scoreboard with majors to Luke Parker and Josh Kennedy over the next seven minutes. Cameron Guthrie responded with a goal for the Cats and then Lance Franklin registered his third to give Sydney a five-point lead. Geelong's two Steves, Motlop and Johnson each kicked majors after that before a goal to Tom Mitchell closed out the term for the Swans, the Cast leading 28-27 at the first change.

The first two goals of the second quarter went Geelong's way via captain Joel Selwood and Jackson Thurlow, opening up a 13-point buffer but Luke Parker responded with his second at the seven-minute mark. Darcy Lang made it 14 points in favour of the Cats with his first at the 11-minute mark but Franklin and Adam Goodes kicked the next two for Swans and it was Geelong by just three points at the 22-minute mark. While parker notched up his third, the Cats kicked two further goals before half time to take a nine-point lead into the long break.

Sydney began to get on top in the third term, restricting Geelong to just one behind in the first 20 minutes of the quarter. However, for all their dominance, the Swans could only translate that to three goals, via Kieran Jack, Kurt Tippett and Parker with his fourth. The Cats regained some initiative in time on, and a late goal to Johnson saw them trailing by just fine points at the last break and seemingly in with a big chance.

Geelong had a chance to grab the lead at the beginning of the final term but Josh Walker's shot at goal brought up only one flag, and from that moment forward, the Sydney Swans took complete control of the match. They kicked the next six goals in a row, two of those to Franklin, with one each going to Jarrad McVeigh (in his 250th AFL match), Gary Rohan, Tom Mitchell and Luke Parker, who kicked his fifth, giving him a personal best. Cory Gregson kicked a consolation goal for Geelong at the 28-minute mark but Tom Mitchell put a full stop on a very good performance by Sydney with the final goal of the game, the Swans winning by a comprehensive 43 points in the end.

Parker (five goals, 11 marks) was outstanding for the Swans, while Mitchell (33 disposals, three goals) and Ben McGlynn (21 possessions and 10 tackles) were also very good, while for Geelong, Mathew Stokes (27 touches and four tackles), Blicavs (16 possessions, 14 hitouts) and Johnson (21 disposals, two goals) were all very good.

The win consolidated a place in the top four for the Swans, who will take on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night, keen to reverse last year's Grand Final result. The Cats find themselves in 13th place on the ladder, a game plus percentage behind eighth place. They will play Carlton at Docklands on Friday night.
