Match Report

Geelong has moved to within percentage of a place in the top eight with a crushing win over Carlton at Docklands Stadium on Saturday night. The Cats started the match brilliantly, kicking six goals too two in the first term, and also won the three remaining quarters, finishing 77 points clear of Carlton and condemning the Blues to another week of external speculation about the state of the club and the future of coach Mick Malthouse.

The Cats clicked into gear almost as soon as the match commenced and Tom Hawkins and Cameron Guthrie had goals on the board within the first six minutes of the match. Geelong added two more majors through Jordan Murdoch and Mitch Clark before Troy Menzel finally put the Blues on the board with a goal at the 15-minute mark. Steve Johnson and Cory Gregson then made it six separate goalkickers for the quarter for Geelong before a late major from Blue Dale Thomas cut the Cats' lead to 21 points at the first break.

Thomas kicked his second goal early in the second term to bring Carlton back to within 14 points and it look as though the Blues were working their way back into the match. However, consecutive goals to Darcy Lang and Murdoch halted Carlton's run and restored a 27-point buffer. Chris Yarran and Jason Tutt pulled the margin back to 17 for the Blues with majors at the 15 and 19-minute marks but Geelong reasserted its authority with the final three goals of the first half via Murdoch, Clark and skipper Joel Selwood, taking a 34-point into the long break.

Any faint hope Carlton took into the second half was extinguished in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. Two goals from Josh Caddy and another to James Kelly took the margin out to 52 points and effectively ended the contest. The Blues to their credit fought out the remainder of the term, trading goals with Geelong until the final goal of the quarter from Shane Kirsten extended the margin to 58 at the last change.

It was virtually one-way traffic in the final quarter, Troy Menzel scoring the Blues' only goal for the term at the 12-minute mark while Geelong added majors through Caddy, Kersten, Rhys Stanley and Mitch Clark to run out winners by 77 points.

Best for the Cats included Murdoch (four goals, 26 disposals), Caddy (three goals, 23 touches) and Guthrie (23 possessions and a goal), while Carlton was well served by Kade Simpson (30 disposals, 10 marks), Menzel (four goals, six marks) and Ed Curnow (16 possessions).

The win extended two remarkable runs for Geelong in its coach Chris Scott. The Cats have now won all 14 of their contests with the Blues at Docklands, and Scott has a 7-0 coaching record against Mick Malthouse.

Geelong will push for a place in the eight when it takes on West Coast at Subiaco next Sunday while Carlton faces another tough Friday night, with the Blues to meet Sydney at the SCG in round nine.
