Match Report

It was a case of new coach but same old story for Carlton at the SCG on Friday night. In the wake of Mick Malthouse's sacking last week, John Barker took the helm at the Blues as they took on Sydney but his debut saw Carlton outclassed by the Swans to the tune of 10 goals. But there were some good signs for the Blues. With key players Marc Murphy, Chris Judd and Bryce Gibbs all missing through injury fought on bravely throughout the night, even winning the last quarter against the accomplished Sydney outfit.

The Blues had a couple of opportunities to make an impact on the scoreboard early in the match but Patrick Cripps and Dennis Armfield could convert those into behinds only in the first five minutes of the match. The next 10 minutes became the 'Buddy' show as Lance Franklin virtually single-handedly took control of the match, kicking three goals. Teammate Gary Rohan followed up with two of his own, with Blue Levi Casboult scoring Carlton's first in between, and it was Sydney leading 5.2 to 1.4 at the first break.

Sydney stamped its authority on the match in the first 20 minutes of the second term, with Ben McGlynn kicking two goals and debutant Dan Robinson and Adam Goodes kicking one each. Goodes caused something of a media storm after his goal, with performing a symbolic indigenous warrior dance towards Carlton fans as part of his acknowledgement to Indigenous Round. In time on, the Blues managed to stem the Swans tide, with Armfield pulling one goal back, but Sydney were a commanding 42 points clear at half time.

Franklin kicked off the third term with his fourth goal but Cameron Wood responded with one for the Blues. Franklin then added his fifth, but Carlton then had a brief period of ascendancy, with goals by Patrick Cripps at the nine-minute mark and Casboult at the 13-minute mark cutting the difference back to 47. But Sydney reasserted its authority in the second half of the quarter, with goals to Kurt Tippett, Dan Hannebery, Goodes and Jarrad McVeigh extending the margin to 63 points at the last change of ends.

To their credit, the Blues fought on bravely in the last quarter, kicking four of the first six goals of the term. Two majors to Andrejs Everitt were accompanied by one each to substitute Dylan Buckley and Zach Tuohy, while Hannebery and Franklin kicked one each in that period. That brought the margin back to 51 points, but another goal each to Franklin and Tippett saw the final difference 60 points in Sydney's favour.

Franklin was a stand-out for the Swans, with seven goals and 22 disposals, while Lewis Jetta (27 possessions, seven marks) and Hannebery (nine marks and 25 touches) were also fine players. For the Blues, Andrew Carrazzo (29 possessions, seven tackles), Everitt (26 touches, eight marks) and Cripps (25 touches and a goal) were all excellent.

Carlton will host Adelaide at the MCG next Saturday before having a bye in round 11, while Sydney will play Gold Coast at Carrara and North Melbourne at Docklands before a break in round 12.
