Match Report

Port Adelaide remains within touch of a place in the top eight after recording a hard-fought win over a tenacious Western Bulldogs outfit on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval. After a high-scoring opening term, the match turned into a somewhat dour affair in the middle to quarters before the Power broke away in the final quarter, kicking six goals to one to record a 38-point victory. It was Port's second win on end after a run of three losses, and keeps alive the Power's chances of a top four finish.

The Bulldogs dominated the early stages of the match but could not convert any of numerous opportunities into goals. Jarrad Grant, Jake Stringer and Luke Dahlhaus all had shots at goal that sailed wide, with a further rushed behind making it four points to nil in the Dogs' favour after seven minutes. Soon after the Power hit the scoreboard with goals to Chad Wingard and Jay Schulz, before Bailey Dale finally score the Bulldogs' first at the 16-minute mark. A brace of goals to Matt White gave Port a 14-point lead, but the Dogs kicked three of the last four goals of the term to trail by just two points at quarter time.

After a slow start to the second term, Nathan Hrovay gave the Bulldogs the lead with a goal at the seven-minute mark, before Justin Westhoff marked and goaled to put the Power back in front. The lead changed again with a major from Jake Stringer at the 14-minute mark, but Port dominated the second half of the quarter, and goals to Sam Gray, Ollie Wines and Paul Stewart saw the Power take a 16-point lead into the long break.

A very defensive third quarter saw only five shots at goal between the two teams. After a behind to Dale, Tory Dickson registered the Bulldogs' seventh goal at the five-minute mark, cutting the difference to nine points, before a goal to Angus Monfries and a point to Wingard saw the Power restore their half-time lead of 16 points after 12 minutes. Stringer kicked his second four minutes later, making the margin 10 points. Amazingly, the next 14 minutes saw no score registered by either team, and the Power still led by 10 at the last change.

A close finish seemed likely when the last quarter began, but after another seven minutes without a score, the young Dogs were blown away as Port broke free with six goals in a row via Schulz, Brad Ebert, Wingard (two), Robbie Gray and skipper Travis Boak. Jordan Roughead scored a last minute consolation goal for the Dogs but when the final siren sounded, the Power were 38 points clear on the scoreboard, a margin perhaps unfair to the gallant Bulldogs.

Ollie Wines (33 disposals, five tackles) played a fine game for the Power, as dis Justin Westhoff (14 marks, 25 disposals) while Jack Macrae (31 possessions, eight tackles) and Easton Wood (12 touches and six marks) were excellent for the Dogs.

Port Adelaide will host Geelong next Friday night, with a place in the top eight awaiting the winner. The Dogs will have a bye in round 11 before hosting Brisbane at Docklands in round 12.
