Match Report

The Western Bulldogs have scored a resounding win over Brisbane at Docklands on Saturday night, to move to within percentage of a place in the top eight. The young Dogs have been somewhat inconsistent this year, with brilliant performances such as those against Sydney and Adelaide mixed in with sub-par efforts against the likes of St Kilda and Melbourne. On Saturday night they showed a bit of both, with poor skill errors on show in the early stages against the Lions, and breathtaking tearaway football in the last quarter and a half, which saw then turn a narrow nine-poiint lead early in the third term to a percentage-boosting 72-point win by game's end.

Jake Stringer got the Dogs going early with a goal after just one minute and when Tory Dickson followed up with his first five minutes later they held a 12-point lead. Brisbane then wrested the  ascendancy away from the Dogs, and goals to Daniel McStay and Nick Robertson saw the Lions in front by a point after 12 minutes. The rest of the quarter was dominated by the Bulldogs, though. They added 3.3 to nil for the remainder of the term, with two goals to Tom Boyd and one to Liam Picken giving them a 20-point quarter-time lead.

No great heights were attained in the second term, each side scoring three goals with both making a number of errors. Dayne Zorko kicked the first of the quarter to cut the difference to 14 points but Tom Boyd gratefully accepted a handpass from Jordan Roughead to kick his third soon after. The Lions came again with a goal to McStay but the next two went the way of the Bulldogs via Dickson and Stringer before a late goal to Josh Green cut the margin back to 21 points at the half.

Brisbane opened the second half strongly, and when Rohan Bewick and McSay both goaled within the first five minutes of the third term the difference was just nine points with the Lions seemingly with the momentum. But the Dogs steadied soon after, and a run of goals to Mitch Wallis, Stringer, Boyd and Luke Dahlhaus saw them out to a 34-point lead as the term entered time-on. Each side added a goal after that, and the Bulldogs were an even six goals clear at the last change.

The Dogs put on a show in the last quarter, kicking nine goals to three and playing as well as they have all year. Stringer (two), Wallis (two), Marcus Bontempelli, Toby McLean, Nathan Hrovat, Koby Stevens and Picken all got amongst the goals, while the Lions could respond with only three of their own, two of them very late, as the Bulldogs cruised to a 76-poinbt win and amassed their highest total since 2011.

Stringer was a fine player with his five goals and 17 possessions while Jack Macrae was outstanding with 35 disposals and six marks. Best for the Lions included Taylor (26 touches, eight marks) and Dayne Beams (28 disposals and seven marks).

The Dogs will meet St Kilda next Saturday, having surrendered a 55-point lead against the Saints just seven weeks ago, while Brisbane will host Adelaide at the Gabba earlier that day.
