Match Report

These two sides met only eight weeks ago, and when they did, the Western Bulldogs played free-flowing footy at breakneck pace in the first half, and the Saints reciprocated in the second to come from behind and win by seven points. Those expecting they same style of footy in the return match were disappointed. This was a tough dour affair with goals very hard to come by, with the Western Bulldogs the only team to break the shackles briefly in the third term, a run of four goals in that period enabling them to hang on for a tough six-point win.

Defences ruled in the in the early minutes of the match, neither side managing anything more than behinds in the first 10 minutes. Marcus Bontempelli finally broke through with a goal on the run for the Dogs, but Saint Jack Bruce marked and goaled at the 14-minute mark to put St Kilda one point ahead. Amazingly, there were no further majors kicked for the term. The Saints added three behinds and the Bulldogs two, and St Kilda led by two points at quarter time.

A running goal to Jason Johannisen saw the Bulldogs take the lead three minutes into the second term, but St Kilda held sway over the next 12 minutes, and majors to Darren Minchington and Maverick Weller gave the Saints a nine-point buffer midway through the quarter. The scoring slowed to a trickle once more after that, and the only remaining goal of the quarter went the way of the Bulldogs, to Jarrad Grant at the 21-minute mark. At the long break, St Kilda led by three points.

The first 10 minutes of the third quarter saw the play open up for the first and only time in the match. Bruce's second gave the Saints a nine-point lead inside the first minute but the Dogs got their running game going after that, and majors to Tom Boyd, Tory Dickson and Liam Picken saw them grab a 10-point break. The defensive clamps went back on after that and there were only two further goals kicked for the term. One to Bailey Dale stretched the margin to 17 points but a response from Nick Riewoldt brought the Saints to within 10 points at 'orange time'.

Goal came at a premium once more in the final quarter. The first two went the way of the Dogs, via Toby McLean and Lukas Webb (his first at AFL level), and they looked on the way to victory, leading by 21 points at the 13-minute mark. But St Kilda locked them down after that, and attacked at the other end. Goals to Riewoldt and Bruce brought the margin back to nine points and the Saints kept pushing after that. For all their efforts, though, they could add only a further three behinds and the Bulldogs held on for a tense win to move into the eight.

Easton Wood (13 marks, 22 disposals) and Bob Murphy (25 possessions) were brilliant in defence all night, repelling countless Saint attacks, while Jack Macrae (27 touches and nine tackles) also had a fine game for the Dogs. For St Kilda, Leigh Montagna (35 possessions, five marks) played a great game, as did Jack Steven (24 touches, eight tackles) and Jack Newness (eight marks, 23 disposals).

The Bulldogs will look to make it three in a row when they take on the Blues at Docklands next Saturday night, while St Kilda will look for its fifth win when it meets Essendon at the same venue the next day. The Saints fell just two points short of the Dons there earlier this season.
