Match Report

The 'Mr Hyde' of North Melbourne's ongoing Jekyll and Hyde saga was on clear display at Carrara on Saturday, with the Kangaroos copping a shellacking from bottom-placed Gold Coast. The Suns, welcoming back Gary Ablett from a long-term shoulder injury, blew an impotent North away in the second half, with Charlie Dixon dominant with seven goals. The win lifted the Suns from the foot of the ladder, while for North, the loss leaves it 11th place, a game and a half behind eighth-placed Adelaide.

Signs were good for the Suns from the very start, Luke Russell having two shots at goal in the first five minutes, registering a behind and a goal. After North hit the scoreboard with a Lindsay Thomas behind, Aaron Hall kicked Gold Coast's second to put the Suns two goals clear. The rest of the first quarter was a slog, each side registering several behinds, and Gold Coast led by all points at the first change.

Robin Nahas had a chance to kick North's first early in the second term after a mark, but his kick sailed left. After that the Suns got right on top, and goals to Keegan Brooksby, Ablett and Dixon saw them leading by 29 points, with the alarm bells ringing in the Kangaroo camp. The Roos responded to those alarm bells, and majors to Ben Cunnington (two) and Shaun Higgins saw them back with 11 points at half time.

Unfortunately for North, the momentum it took into half time had disappeared but the time the third quarter began. Dixon and Kade Kolodjashnij goaled within the first three minutes and the Suns were back out to a 23-point lead. Drew Petrie got one back for the Roos but Brooksby and Mitch Hallahan kicked the next two, and Gold Coast were suddenly 29 points clear again. Nahas cut it back to 23 with his first but a brace to Dixon took the Suns lead out to six goals before Higgins' second reduced it to 30 at three-quarter-time to give North the faintest of hope.

That faint hope was extinguished almost as soon as the last quarter began. Ablett goaled within the first minute, and Hall and Dixon followed up with majors over the next seven minutes to put the Suns 49 points clear and settle the score. The game opened right up after that and became a free-scoring affair. North added four goals before the final siren sounded but the Suns added five more in the same period to canter to a 55-point victory.

Kolodjashnij was outstanding for the winners, with 28 touches and a goal, while Dixon (seven goals, five marks) and Ablett (31 possessions, three goals) were also excellent. For North, Goldstein (62 hitouts, six tackles) and Ben Cunnington (29 possessions and two goals) were standouts.

North's next assignment is a home-game against Geelong at Docklands next Saturday night, while the Suns will travel to Cairns to take on the Western Bulldogs earlier that afternoon.
