Match Report

Essendon has pipped Melbourne by nine points in a low-scoring scrap at the MCG on Saturday. The match never scaled any great heights but after their 110-point shellacking at the hands of St Kilda a week earlier, the Bombers would have been happy to take victory in any form. They were perhaps lucky to win, as the Demons pressed hard in the last quarter but let themselves down with poor kicking for goal, finishing with a lamentable 7.18 as against the Dons' 10.9.

It was slow going right from the beginning in this match, with neither side finding the big sticks until the 11-minute mark. Dom Tyson finally broke the drought with a goal after receiving a free kick for a high tackle, and the Demons led by 12 points at the 12-minute mark. Ben Howlett marked and goaled three minutes later to bring the Bombers back to within a point but it was behinds only for the rest of the term at the quarter-time siren saw both teams with 1.3.9.

Melbourne attacked heavily in the first seven minutes of the second term, unfortunately for little return. The Demons managed just 1.3 from four scoring shots, the goal going to Jeremy Howe.  Brent Stanton responded for the Bombers at the nine-minute mark, bring them back within three points. The next 14 minutes were devoid of scoring other than a behind to Melbourne's Nathan Jones. Joe Daniher finally broke the drought to put Essendon ahead with his first at the 22-minute mark, but a late goal to Aaron Vandenberg saw Melbourne back in front by five at half time.

The game opened right up in the third quarter. Joe Daniher kicked his second after two minutes, with Jesse Hogan kicking his first two minutes later to restore the lead for the Demons. From that point, Essendon took control, kicking the next five goals, two more to Daniher, two to Shaun Edwards and one to Dyson Hepppell. The Dons took a decisive 24-point lead into the final break.

Essendon lost all momentum when the final quarter began and the Demons pressed hard for the first 20 minutes of the term. Neville Jetta opened with a major at the six-minute mark to cut the margin to 18 but despite dominating the next 10 minutes, Melbourne could register no more than five behinds. Jeff Garlett finally split the middle at the 16-minute mark and when Tom McDonald followed up with another within two minutes, the Demons were only three points behind. Essendon's resolved then stiffened, with Joe Daniher's fifth giving the Bombers a nine-point lead, which they defended for the last few minutes to record a stirring victory.

Michael Hurley (nine marks, 24 disposals) and Daniher (five goals, 13 disposals) were outstanding for the winners, while Melbourne was well served by ruckman Max Gawn (58 hitouts, 19 possessions) and Bernie Vince (35 touches and three tackles).

The win puts Essendon a game clear of Melbourne in 14th place, with the Bombers to meet North Melbourne at Docklands this Friday night, and the Demons hosting bottom-placed Brisbane at the MCG on Sunday.
