Match Report

Sydney has suffered a second consecutive heavy loss as West Coast continues a push towards top place on the ladder. The Eagles made short work of the Swans and were on top from the very beginning, kicking 5.0 to 0.5 in the first quarter. Things barely improved for Sydney after that and it had only one goal on the board as late 16 minutes into the third term. They staged a brief revival, kicking five out of six goals either side of three-quarter time, but the Eagles finished strongly to win by 52 points.

The match got off to a slow start and defences dominated for the first nine minutes, during which time just one behind was registered, for Sydney by Isaac Heeney. But once the Eagles got their first major through Jack Darling, the goals started to flow - at least for West Coast. Matt Priddis and Josh Kennedy followed up with two more goals over the next six minutes, after which the Swans had a sustained period of attack which yielded just four behinds. The Eagles closed out the term with majors to Darling and Luke Shuey and led by 25 points at quarter time.

West Coast's dominance continued early in the second quarter, goals to Darling and Mark LeCras taking the Eagles' lead out to 37 points. Adam Goodes finally scored Sydney's first at the 13-minute mark but the Swans would have to wait more than a quarter before the next goal came along. West Coast scored only one further goal for the term, but took a commanding 41-point lead into half time.

The Eagles attacked relentlessly in the first half of the third term and registered goals through LeCras, Kennedy and Josh Hill to take a 64-point lead. The margin could have been greater had a couple of other shots not been missed. From there the Swans began to turn things around. Heeney kicked his first at the 16-minute mark and Brandon Jack added another two minutes later. Jamie Cripps chipped in with a goal for the Eagles but Heeney and Jack scored majors again to make it four out of five for the Swans and the margin was back to 45 points at the last change.

When Lewis Jetta and Rhyce Shaw kicked the first two goals of the last quarter for Sydney to cut the difference to 32 points, murmurs of a famous come-from-behind win began to surface. But Callum Sinclair snuffed out such talk with a goal at the 18-minute mark, and Josh Kennedy and Nic Naitanui added exclamation marks to the win with goals in the last few minutes to see the Eagles home by 52 points.

The Eagles best included Matt Priddis (13 tackles, 34 possessions), Andrew Gaff (32 possessions and a goal) and LeCras (24 touches, two goals) while for Sydney Josh Kennedy (31 possessions, five tackles) and Shaw (26 disposals, five marks) played well.

The Eagles will continue their push for top spot when they take on Gold Coast at Carrara next Saturday, while Sydney will look to get back on the winners list against Adelaide at the SCG on the same day.
