Match Report

Kardinia Park on Saturday night was cause for celebration for both Geelong and Sydney. The Cats celebrated the 200th match of skipper Joel Selwood while the Swans welcomed back Adam Goodes, returning to the fray after the booing saga of recent weeks. As a gesture of goodwill and inclusiveness, both sides ran through the one banner prior to the match. The crowd was well behaved and booing of Goodes was minimal. The match itself gave Geelong more cause to celebrate as the Swans faded  badly after half time to go down to the Cats by 32 points, surrendering a place in the top four to the Western Bulldogs in the process.

A long bomb from Andrew Mackie got the Cats going at the five-minute mark of the match but Brandon Jack responded for the Swans not long after to level the scores. Darcy Lang put Geelong back in front with his first but Sydney had the edge over the next 15 minutes and majors to Tom Mitchell, Isaac Heeney and Goodes saw the Swans out to an 11-point lead in time on. Darcy Lang's second eased the pressure for Geelong, which was back within three points at quarter time.

The Cats held sway early in the second term, with goals to Mitch Duncan and Tom Hawkins putting the Cats nine points clear at the seven-minute mark. Sydney then had its most dominant period of the match. Lewis Jetta kicked a long goal on the run and when Kurt Tippett and Luke Parker followed up with further goals, the Swans led by 11. Hawkins pulled one back for the Cats but Jetta's second gave Sydney a 13-point half-time lead.

A distinct momentum shift accompanied the beginning of the second half. The Cats attacked heavily and, after a couple of behinds to Josh Caddy and Selwood, strung three consecutive goals together through Duncan, Caddy and Cory Gregson to take a five-point lead. Geelong continued to pepper the goals after that but shots by Hawkins, Caddy and Cam Guthrie produced only behinds, leaving the door ajar for the Swans who trailed by eight points at three-quarter time.

Any thoughts of Sydney mounting a last-quarter challenge evaporated within the first five minutes with Hawkins goaling at the one and four-minute marks to take the Cats out to a 21-point lead. Dan Hannebery answered with a major at the eight-minute mark but after a scoreless arm-wrestle over the next nine minutes, Geelong then took complete control. Within a five-minute period, Caddy, Mathew Stokes and Steven Motlop all goaled to put the result beyond doubt, the Cats finishing 32 points to the good.

Selwood was a matchwinner in his milestone match, with 35 disposals and six marks, while Jimmy Bartel (25 touches) and Caddy (nine tackles, 22 possessions) were also excellent. For Sydney, Jetta (nine tackles) and Josh Kennedy (32 disposals, five tackles) were among the best.

The win kept Geelong in the eight, marginally ahead of Adelaide. The Cats will face Hawthorn at the MCG next Saturday night. Having slipped back to fifth, Sydney will host 11th-placed Collingwood at the SCG on Friday night.
