Match Report

The Western Bulldogs' dream run has come to a crashing halt against a West Coast Eagles outfit that is pushing for premiership favouritism. The match promised to be a free-flowing shoot-out and, for the best part of three quarters, it was exactly that, with both sides running manically in waves out of defence and scoring on a regular basis. But the young Dogs with 13 players with fewer than 50 games experience and only two with more than 100, wilted under the intense pressure of the more seasoned Eagles and faded badly in the last quarter to go down by 77 points.

West Coast drew first blood with Mark LeCras marking and goaling from a tight angle in the opening two minutes. But the Bulldogs hit back with goals to Stewart Crameri and Jack Redpath and halfway through the term led by five points. Josh Kennedy then kicked his first for the Eagles and when Callum Sinclair followed up with another, it was West Coast by seven. Jake Stringer kicked his first at the other end and the Dogs were back within a point at the 22-minute mark. But the Eagles finished the quarter strongly and majors to Kennedy and Shuey gave them a 15-point buffer at quarter time.

Kennedy opened the second term with his third goal but the Bulldogs were not about to lie down. Stringer, Tory Dickson and Stewart Crameri rattled on three goals in three minutes and the Dogs were within a point at the 10-minute mark. Jamie Cripps eased the pressure for West Coast with a goal at the 11-minute mark but Stringer's second had the Bulldogs back within a point at the 17-minute mark. The Eagles got on a bit of a roll after that and kicked three of the quarter's last four goals to lead 75-59 at half time.

Redpath's second cut the margin back to 11 at the six-minute mark of the third term but a goal to Mark Hutchings followed by two to Kennedy took the Eagles lead to a game high 29. Again the Bulldogs came back, and majors to Dickson and Stringer (his fifth) had them back within 17 points early in time on. West Coast steadied again though, and two late goals to ex-Bulldog Josh Hill saw them lead by a comfortable 32 points at the last turn.

Hill added another to start the final term and when Dom Sheed added another at the seven-minute mark the Eagles' lead was out to 41 points. Mitch Wallis cut it back to 35 with his first at the 10-minute mark but that was to be the Bulldogs' last hurrah. Their young players tired badly in the last 20 minutes and the Eagles took full advantage, slamming on another seven goals to blow the margin out to virtually 13 goals.

Best for West Coast included Kennedy (seven goals, 14 marks), Matt Priddis (37 disposals, seven tackles) and Nic Naitanui (48 hitouts, 14 touches), while the Dogs were well served by Stringer (five goals, 17 possessions), Jack Macrae (25 touches, seven tackles) and Lachie Hunter (24 disposals, six marks).

With two games to go, wins over Adelaide in Adelaide and St Kilda at home could yet see the Eagles finish on top of the ladder while the Dogs, virtually assured of a finals berth already, could finish anyway from fourth to eighth depending on their results against North Melbourne and Brisbane and the performances of sides around them on the ladder.
