Match Report

GWS, looking to finish the season strongly, has crushed Carlton by 81 points at the Sydney Showground on Saturday to record its 11th win of the year. The match was even in the first half but the Giants gave an indication of the force they could be in 2016 with 15 goals to three in the second half. Brendon Bolton, who will be the Blues' coach next season, looked on from the grandstand as Carlton were torn apart and would perhaps have understood the true magnitude of the task ahead as he did so.

A slow start to the match saw the two sides kick only five behinds between them in the first 10 minutes. When the goals did finally start coming, the first two came via Carlton's Matthew Watson and Blaine Boekhorst, giving the Blues an 11-point lead at the 15-minute mark. But the Giants hit back and majors to Adam Treloar and Ryan Griffen saw them back within a point at the first change of ends.

The second term began as the first did, with the two sides trading in behinds. By halfway through the quarter, GWS had added four of them and Carlton one and the Giants led by two. James Stewart finally scored the first goal of the term to put GWS eight points clear at the 14-minute mark, but the Blues dominated the next 10 minutes and goals to Andrejs Everitt and Tom Bell had the Blues in front by eight before late majors to Tomas Bugg and Stewart had GWS leading by five at the half.

When the second half began, the game took on a different complexion entirely. It started badly for GWS, with Griffen limping off and subbed out with a knee injury early in the third term, but the Giants rammed on three goals through Jeremy Cameron, Bugg and Treloar to open up a 25-point lead. Andrew Walker pulled one back for the Blues at the 14-minute mark but that was to be their only score of the quarter, as the Giants went on a goal-kicking spree. They added five more for the term (with two more to Cameron) and led by an even 50 points at 'orange' time.

Jason Tutt gave the Blues a brief flicker of hope with the first goal of the final term but the Giants went on their merry way after that, with a withering burst that took in seven of the next eight goals. Four of those went to Cameron, and he finished with seven for the match as GWS won running away by more than 13 goals.

Treloar (28 possessions, three goals) and Cameron (seven goals, 12 marks) were outstanding for the winners, while Carlton was well served by Ed Curnow (26 touches and seven marks) and young Patrick Cripps (30 disposals, three tackles).

GWS will see out the season on Sunday at Docklands against Melbourne, where the Demons have lost an incredible 22 matches in a row, while Carlton will finish it off against premiership contenders Hawthorn at the MCG.
