Match Report

Two of last year's finalists - North Melbourne and Adelaide - met first up at Docklands on Saturday night and both did enough to suggest that they won't be far off the mark in 2016. In the end it was the Kangaroos who got the chocolates, a seven-goal third term helping them overcome a three-goal half-time deficit to sneak home by 10 points.

The Roos got away to a good start, with a pass from Lindsay Thomas to Nick Dal santo giving them their first goal within two minutes. Big Josh Jenkins responded for the Crows and another from Matt Crouch saw Adelaide ahead by four points at the 11-minute mark. The two sides traded behinds for the next 15 minutes before ex-Magpie Paul Seedsman kicked his first goal in Crows' colours to give Adelaide a two-goal lead. The Crows added two further behinds but a late goal to Jarrad Waite saw North within eight at the first break.

Wait followed up with the first goal of the second term but the Crows skipped away to a 15-point lead with majors to Tom Lynch and Jenkins before Drew Petrie pulled one back for North. Mackay kicked his first for Adelaide at the 12-minute mark and when Sam Jacobs followed up with another eight minutes later, the Crows were out to a 20-point lead. Waite kicked his second but Jenkins responded with his second also and the two sides then added one further goal each for the term to leave Adelaide 18 points to the good at the half.

Alarm bells started to ring for North when Walker kicked his second early in the third quarter to give the Crows a four-goal buffer but this proved to be a catalyst for the Kangaroos, who answered with majors to Shaun Higgins and Thomas. Jenkins steadied Adelaide with his fourth but the goals began to flow after that as the game opened right up. Ben Brown kicked his second for North, Jenkins kicked his fifth and then the Roos struck again with a major to veteran Brent Harvey. As the quarter ticked into time on, it was the still the Crows by 13 but two further time-on goals to Harvey saw North within one-point at the final break.

A missed snapshot by Ben Cunnington levelled the scores early in the last term before big Todd Goldstein received a handball from Thomas and goaled to give North the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter. After a quiet night, Eddie Betts levelled the scores with his first at the eight-minute mark but thereafter, goals proved hard to come by for both sides. Halfway through the term, Perie marked and kicked a big goal to restore a six-point lead for North. Debutant Mitch McGovern had a chance to level the scores again soon after but missed. With under three minutes to go, a soccer off the ground from Taylor Garner gave the Roos an 11-point buffer and settled the result, North hanging on to win by 10.

For North, Cunnington (27 possessions) and Goldstein (44 hitouts, seven tackles) were standouts, while Adelaide was well served by Jenkins (five goals) and the evergreen Scott Thompson (15 kicks and 15 bandpasses).

Round two will see North travel to the Gabba to take on Brisbane, the Kangaroos strong favourites to make it 2-0, while the Crows will seek their first win for 2016 in Saturday's Showdown against Port at the Adelaide Oval.
