Match Report

After a disappointing 2015 season plagued by injury and off-field issues, the Gold Coast Suns have started 2016 in the best possible way, racking up a third win from three games against Carlton at Carrara on Saturday night. The Suns won three of the game's four quarters, and split the other to register a solid 54-point win to entrench themselves in the top four.

Gold Coat was on song from virtually the very beginning of the match, with Clay Cameron scoring the game's first goal after Matthew Wright had kicked a behind for the Blues. Charlie Curnow got one back for Carlton but majors to Tom Lynch and Nick Malceski closed out the quarter and the Suns led 3.2 to 1.3 at quarter time. Goals remained hard to come by in the second term, each side managing just two and at the long break, Gold Coast held a 14-point lead.

A goal from Matthew Wright had Carlton within eight points at the two-minute mark of the third term but the Suns got on top from that point, four of the next five goals - including two to Jack Martin - going there way. At 'orange' time, Gold Coast held a comfortable 26 points.

There was to be no let-up from the Suns when the final term got underway. They attacked heavily and goals to Martin, Lynch (two) and Sexton were accompanied by several behinds and by midway through the last quarter the margin was 52 points and the result well and truly beyond doubt. Gold Coast continued to attack after that but added just three more behinds, the final margin being an even nine goals.

Best for the Suns included Aaron Hall (40 possessions and six marks) and Tom Lynch (four goals and 10 marks) while third-gamer Jacob Weitering (nine marks, 26 disposals) was a standout for Carlton.

Next up for Gold Coast is a 'Q Clash' against lowly Brisbane, and it's hard to see Suns missing a chance to win a fourth game from four matches. The Blues, meanwhile, will be hard-pressed not to slip to 0-4, with a tough game to come against the resurgent Western Bulldogs at Docklands on Saturday night.
