Match Report

The 42nd Western Derby has gone the way of West Coast, with Eagles pulling away from the Dockers in the second half in an interesting encounter at Subiaco. The win left West Coast inside the eight with a 2-1 record, with Fremantle languishing near the bottom of the ladder with a 0-3 return and a poor percentage of 61.4. To make matters worse for the Dockers, they lost key ruckman Aaron Sandilands with a punctured lung, sustained via an accidental knee from Eagle Nic Natanui in a marking contest.

It was actually Fremantle that started the match the stronger and the Dockers could have set up an early break but for missed shots from Lachie Weller and Hayden Ballantyne. As it was Michael Walters finally kicked their first goal at the 12-minute mark, giving them a lead, 8-0. The Eagles worked their way into the match after that, each side adding to goals before the quarter-time break, and it was the Dockers by eight at the first change.

Defence and poor kicking for goal held sway in the first 20 minutes of the second term, the two sides trading in behinds until Eric Mackenzie finally broke the drought with a goal to the Eagles early in time on, bringing them to within two points. Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy added two further behinds for West Coast to level the scores, and Jack Darling's second goal gave the Eagles a six-point advantage at the long break.

West Coast got a decisive break early in the third quarter, with majors to Jamie Cripps and Lewis Jetta extending the lead to 19 points after seven minutes. Defences got back on top after that, each side scoring just one further goal before three-quarter time, at which stage the Eagles still led by 19. They continued to pepper the goals early in the final term, but a series of missed shots left the door open for Fremantle, and the Dockers suddenly exploded into action with three goals in six minutes, two to skipper Matthew Pavlich, to be within five points midway through the term.

The Eagles were stung into action by that Docker onslaught and goals to Lycett and Jetta stemmed the Fremantle flow. The Dockers got one more through Ballantyne to get back within 14 points but goals to Eagles Darling, Shuey and Kennedy snuffed out any final Docker resistance, West Coast running out winners by 33 points in the end.

Matthew Priddis continued his Brownlow form for the victors, with 31 touches and six tackles, while Nat Fyfe did the same for the Dockers, with 10 tackles and 26 possessions of his own.

West Coast, sitting comfortably at 2-1 will be favourites to make it 3-1 with a win over Richmond at home on Friday night. The staggering Dockers face another big challenge, a match against the undefeated North Melbourne at Dockland their next assignment. A loss would see them with a 0-4 start and make a 2016 finals appearance seem very unlikely.
