Match Report

North Melbourne and Melbourne played out an amazing match of football at Bellerive Oval Sunday, scoring 41 goals between them before finishing the match only five points apart. The match finished with Demon Billy Stretch having a snapshot at goal that would have given Melbourne victory. The umpires ruled that the siren sounded just before he kicked, but the shot missed anyway as North held one for a thrilling one-point victory.

The Kangaroos has been expected to make short work of the Demons, and for much of the first quarter, they did exactly that. After four scoreless minutes a goal to Sam Gibson triggered an avalanche of goals North's way. Over the next 17 minutes the 'Roos added another six goals without a miss - three of those to Todd Goldstein and as the quarter entered time on, North led 42-0. The shellshocked Dees recovered late in the term to kick two of the last three goals and trail by an even six goals at quarter time.

If North's first 20 minutes of the first quarter was amazing, what came in the first 20 of the second term was even more so. Incredibly, Melbourne produced a virtual mirror-image performance to the Kangaroos' first-quarter effort, kicking 7.2 while holding North scoreless. By early into the time on period the Demons led by eight points before the 'Roos recovered as Melbourne had in the first to kick two of the last four majors. At half time, it was the Demons in front by seven points.

North Melbourne had the breeze in the third term but Melbourne kept pace with them until halfway through the quarter, each side kicking three goals as the Demons held firm with their seven-point buffer. The last 15 minutes belong entirely to the Kangaroos, however, and they added three goals to nil to turn for home with a lead of 18 points. The question was, with Melbourne to have the advantage of the wind in the last term, would that be enough?

It would take until the final siren before that question was answered. Dean Kent got the Demons off to the perfect start in the last term with a goal inside the first 30 seconds. The two sides the traded in behinds until Nathan Jones and then Kent again kicked majors to tie things up at 111-111 at the nine-minute mark. The game seemed Melbourne's for the taking at this point but North suddenly lifted to kick four of the next five goals to lead by 18 points and seemingly settle the result.

But there was to be one final twist. The Demons came again and goals to James Harmes and Kent had them within five points with 20 seconds on the clock. They surged forward from the resultant clearance but the final siren beat them by a whisker, North holding on in an epic struggle.

Veteran Brent Harvey was outstanding for the victors, with 22 disposals and six goals, while Goldstein was almost as important with five goals and 38 hitouts. Max Gawn was a standout for the brave Demons, with an amazing 63 hitouts to go with his 18 touches.

The fortunate Kangaroos are now 3-0 and third on the ladder, with a home match against the winless Fremantle to come on Sunday. The desperately unlucky Demons (10th on the ladder with a 1-2 record) will meet Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday in a vital match for both sides.
