Match Report

Geelong has bounced back from a disappointing round two loss to GWS to thrash the Brisbane Lions in its first true home game of the season at Kardinia Park in Sunday's twilight match. The Cats started off with a bang, kicking six goals to one in the first quarter, and won every other term besides, even the third when they managed a woeful 2.9, to win by 69 points.

Tom Hawkins kicked off proceedings with a mark and goal inside the first two minutes and another major to Lincoln McCarthy five minutes later had Geelong 10 points up. Tom Bell marked and goaled to put Brisbane on the scoreboard but it was one-way traffic towards the Geelong goals after that. Hawkins kicked another goal, Daniel Menzel chipped in with a goal in his first game of the year, and Patrick Dangerfield finished the quarter off with two to see the Cats to a 27-point quarter-time lead.

The middle quarters were not particularly memorable, with Geelong outscoring the Lions by 11 points in the second term and one point in the third. But for some woeful kicking for goal, the Cats could have blown away Brisbane in the third quarter, but goals to Steven Motlop and Hawkins were accompanied by minor scores to Zac Smith, Harry Taylor, Hawkins, Josh Caddy, Motlop, Darcy Lang, Hawkins again and Dangerfield.

In the last quarter, the Cats continued their dominance but straightened up in front of goal to kick 6.3, with the Brisbane Lions responding with just 1.3 as Geelong cruised to a 69-point win.

Best for the Cats included Dangerfield (26 touches, three goals) and Joel Selwood (34 possessions), while Tom Bell (22 disposals, six marks) was a fine player for the Lions.

Geelong will look to improve its record to 3-1 with a win over Essendon at the MCG on Saturday, while Brisbane will hope to put up a better show again Gold Coast at the Gabba later that night.
