Match Report

For the second week running, Hawthorn has pulled victory from the jaws of defeat, inflicting a three-point heartbreaking loss on St Kilda, just as it had done to the Western Bulldogs a week earlier at Docklands. In front off just over 17,000 fans at their second home, York Park, the Hawks struggled all day to shake the Saints off and they still trailed midway through the final quarter before a couple of late goals and some perhaps lucky decisions went their way, allowing them to narrowly record a third win for the season.

Having won 15 games in a row at this venue, the Hawks were expected to have little trouble in seeing off the young developing Saints, and there was little in the first quarter to suggest anything to the contrary would happen. With the wind at their backs, the Hawks looked slick in kicking five goals and they restricted St Kilda to just two majors to take a three-goal lead into the first break. The Saints showed that they were well and truly up for a fight in the second quarter, though, and kicked five goals to one to take a seven-point lead into time on. The experienced Hawks regrouped, however, and late majors top Tim O'Brien and Luke Breust saw Hawthorn take a five-point buffer into half time.

The Hawks were expected to break the game open in the 'premiership' third quarter and, with a goal to O'Brien and another the hero of round three, James Sicily, looked like doing just that. But the dogged Saints fought back, and goals to Darren Minchington and Josh Bruce (two) had scores level at the last break, with St Kilda coming home with the breeze in the last term.

Goals to Paddy McCartin saw the Saints out to 11-point lead at the four-minute mark of the final quarter and a major upset appeared to be brewing. But the champs, as they had done a week earlier, climbed off the canvas and landed three blows - goals to Jordan Lewis, Breust and Paul Puopolo to take a 10-point lead. The second of those majors appeared to be very fortunate, with two St Kilda kicks that looked to be legitimate were deemed not to have travelled the required 15 metres, the umpire's play-on call allowing Breust to sneak in a goal that gave the Hawks back the lead.

The Saints came again, though, and after a goal to Eli Templeton, McCartin had a chance to seal victory for the Saints with a late shot after a mark but his shot sailed just right and Hawthorn held on to win a thriller by just three points.

Sam Mitchell continue his fine form with a brilliant 44-possession game, while skipper Nick Riewoldt was almost as good for the Saints, with 12 marks and 23 touches of his own.

Hawthorn has now won three of four and it will host Adelaide (also 3-1) in what should be a fascinating encounter on Friday night at the MCG. St Kilda (12th on the ladder with a 1-3 record) will meet GWS (ninth, 2-2) at Docklands on Sunday.
