Match Report

North Melbourne remains at the head of the ladder and the only undefeated team after five rounds after it comfortably defeated the Gold Coast Suns in enemy territory at Carrara on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos kicked the first goal of the match and were never headed after that, going on to win on the back of strong first and last quarters.

Ruckman Todd Goldstein continued his goal-kicking trend of 2016, booting the first of the match inside the first minute. Big Peter Wright got the Suns on the board with his first at the seven-minute mark but another tall, Ben Brown, answered for North a couple of minutes later. After a period in which both sides scored two behinds, Brown's second, followed quickly by another from Drew Petrie, put North 19 points clear. Ex-Bulldog Jarrad Grant - appearing for the first time in the Suns' colours - pulled one back for Gold Coast but the Kangas kicked two of the next three to take an even three-goal lead into the first break.

The Suns challenged strongly in the second term and goals to Wright and Callum Ah Chee had them back within five points after five minutes. Shaun Higgins gave North breathing space with his first but when Michael Rischitelli slotted one at the 19-minute mark, Gold Coast was within three points. The time-on period was dominated by North, however, and majors to Higgins, Jamie Macmillan and Brown had the Roos leading comfortably by 22 points at the half.

When play resumed after the long break, the Suns again challenged. Two goals to Tom Lynch and a third to Wright once again reduced the margin to three points midway through the third quarter but, as it had done in the second term, North closed out the third strongly. Higgins kicked his third and Jack Ziebell and Lindsay Thomas also chimed in with majors and the Kangaroos' lead was back out to 21 at the final break.

There was to be no early challenge from the Suns in the final term; in fact it was North which came out strongly. The Roos scored for four goals in the first 11 minutes - two to Jarrad Waite - to blow the margin out to 45 points. Gold Coast managed a couple of consolation goals through Gary Ablett and Lynch but Brown iced the game with his fourth at the 25-minute mark, North comfortable home by 39 points.

Goldstein, with 24 hitouts and 18 disposals, continued his rich vein of form, while Peter Wright with his three goals and eight marks was prominent for the Suns.

North's win sets up a mouth-watering clash with the second-placed Western Bulldogs at Docklands next Friday night, the first time the sides will have met for top-of-the-ladder honours since 1998. After winning their first three matches, the Suns have dropped two in a row and will look to arrest the slides against Geelong at Kardinia Park on Saturday.
