Match Report

The Western Bulldogs scored a comfortable win over the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night, but their wretched run of injuries has continued, with half-back Matt Suckling sustaining an ankle injury that will see him miss a month of football. Suckling became the third Bulldog half-back to succumb to injury in three weeks, with Bob Murphy rupturing an ACL in round three and Jason  Johannisen tearing a hamstring in round four, an injury that will see him miss 10 weeks. Despite the injury concerns, the Dogs made relatively short work of Brisbane to win by 53 points, a margin that would have been much greater if not for wastefulness in front of goal.

Brisbane was on song early and had two goals on the board via Ryan Lester and Tom Rockliff after the Bulldogs had opened with two behinds. The Dogs got their act together after that but, despite peppering the goals, could not find the big sticks. Tom Campbell (twice), Luke Dahlhaus and Toby McLean all missed gettable shots and when the term went into time-on they trailed 0.6 to 2.0. The Bulldogs finally straightened up to kick three in three minutes to end the term leading 3.6 to 2.1 and looking ominous.

Tom Liberatore's second goal within the first minute of the second quarter pushed the Dogs' lead out to 17 points and Tom Campbell's first 12 minutes later saw them 22 points clear. Lester pulled one back for the Lions but the Bulldog machine really clicked into gear after that and four majors to Marcus Bontempelli (two), Jake Stringer and Dahlhaus within the space of five minutes had the Dogs 34 points clear at half time.

Stringer, Tory Dickson and Lin Jong all goaled within the first eight minutes of the third quarter to push the lead out to 52 points and the Bulldogs looked to be heading towards a 100-point thrashing of Brisbane. However, a combination of further poor kicking from the Dogs and a heartening display of skill and hardness from the Lions saw Brisbane hold its own for much of the remainder of the match, and this was reflected in the final margin being 53 points in the end.

Koby Stevens had a magnificent match for the Dogs, collecting the ball 34 times and laying six tackles. For the Lions, Dayne Zorko (21 touches six marks) played a fine game.

The Dogs will play for top spot at Docklands on Friday night, a win over the undefeated North Melbourne enough to see them take the mantle from the Kangaroos. Brisbane will look to regroup but it will be at long odds to get over the top of the in-form Sydney at the Gabba on Sunday.
