Match Report

In a dour and low-scoring struggle befitting of two sides from the lower reaches of the ladder, Carlton has outlasted Essendon to win its second game in a row at the MCG on Sunday. The match amazingly saw almost two full quarters elapse between the fourth and fifth goal of the game. Not one major being registered after Liam Jones kicked Carlton's third goal at the 26-minute mark of the first quarter, until Mitch Brown kicked Essendon's second at the 14-minute mark of the third quarter. Brown's goal sparked a mini-run which saw Essendon take the lead bit a Carlton burst in the final term was enough to get the Blues home by 15 points.

Dale Thomas got the Blues off to a good start when he roved nicely and slotted a goal from a tight angle at the four-minute mark to give Carlton the lead. Defences got on top after that and the only goal for the next 14 minutes came from Essendon's Orazio Fantasia, his first levelling the scores. Carlton got on top late in the term, majors to Matthew Wright and Jones giving the Blues a 12-point quarter-time lead.

The second quarter was to pass without a goal being scored. A combination of defensive pressure, skill errors in field play and poor kicking for goal combined to see neither side register a major, the Blues adding six behinds and Essendon recording three. At the long break, Carlton led 3.7 to 1.4.

There appeared to be a real danger of a repeat of the second term in the third quarter. After 14 minutes, each side had kicked just one further behind, a rushed one for the Bombers and one to the Blues' Matthew Wright. Finally, 43 minutes after Liam Jones's major, Mitch Brown marked in the goal square and booted Essendon's second. This 'opened the floodgates' to a degree, with James Polkinghorne and Darcy Parish adding further goals and the Dons were suddenly ahead. Stung into action, Carlton responded with majors to Jed Lamb and Bryce Gibbs to lead by seven points going into the final term.

Joe Daniher cut the margin back to one with his first early in the last term, but a withering burst of four goals in just four minutes saw the Blues out to a 26-point lead and the match appeared to be theirs. But there was to be another twist. The Bombers took their turn to kick three in three minutes and the margin was just eight points going into time on. Carlton held firm, though, and a big kick from Andrew Phillips at the 25-minute mark sealed a 15-point win for the Blues, their second for 2016.

Dale Thomas (31 possessions, seven tackles) played probably his best game since crossing to Carlton, while ex-Bulldog Adam Cooney was a fine player for the Bombers.

The Blues will have a chance of making it three wins in a row when they take on Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday, while Essendon faces a very tough match against Sydney at the SCG on the same day.
