Match Report

Drew Petrie's 300th match for North Melbourne was celebrated with a Kangaroos win over St Kilda at Docklands on Sunday at Docklands Stadium. The Roos got the job done against the Saints, but was nowhere near as easy a task as most had expected. North appeared to be heading for a comfortable win at the nine-minute mark of the last quarter the they led by 26 points, but a withering burst from St Kilda had the scores level at the 25-minute mark, and it appeared the Saints might spoil the Petrie party.

But a controversial free-kick to North's Todd Goldstein after a ruck contest saw him kick a behind to give the Kangas a one-point lead. The Saints were unable to clear it out of defence from the resultant kick-in, and the ball eventually ended up on the boundary line where a free kick was awarded to Mason Wood with 22 seconds left in the match. Wood, knowing how much time there was remaining, used his full allowed 30 seconds to prepare his shot at goal, while St Kilda fans jeered and booed, and kicked truly after the final siren to give North a narrow seven-point win.

After Shane savage kicked the first goal of the match, Drew Petrie got his milestone match off to a great start with a goal four minutes later. Maverick Weller returned the lead to St Kilda at the 11-minute mark with a goal and the Saints had chances too extend that lead over the next 10 minutes but Weller, Josh Bruce and Jack Billings all missed shots. The tide then turned and North took full advantage, with goals to Ben Brown (two) and Ben Cunnington giving the Roos a 14-point quarter-timer lead.

No goals were registered in the first nine minutes of the second term, with Tim Membrey finally breaking the drought for the Saints to cut the margin to eight points. North answered via Brent Harvey two minutes later but there was to be only one further major for the term, kicked by Jarrad Waite at the 23-minute mark. At the long break, it was the Kangaroos ahead by 19 points.

The Saints came out firing in the third quarter with Membrey and skipper Nick Riewoldt both marking strongly and goaling within the first four minutes to bring St Kilda within seven points. A free kick to Petrie saw the margin back out to 13, but a second goal to Riewoldt had the difference back to seven after 11 minutes. North kicked the next two via Mason Wood and Shaun Higgins to extend the lead to 22 but the last major of the term went to Bruce, cutting the deficit to 17 and giving the Saints a sense of hope at the last change of ends.

North dominated proceedings and could have settled the match but, after a goal to Higgins, missed three times via Nahas, Ziebell and Higgins. That left the door open for the Saints, and they rushed through it with full and surprising force. Riewoldt's third goal was followed by another to Billings, and when Membrey added his third and Bruce his second, St Kilda had wiped out a 26-point deficit in just 14 minutes and looked full of running. The Kangaroos managed to stop the Saints' charge in the last few minutes, though, and Goldstein's behind and Wood's post-siren goal saw them sneak home.

Ben Cunnington played a fine game for the Roos, collecting 26 possessions and five marks. For St Kilda, Riewoldt (16 marks, 24 disposals) played another outstanding match.

North are now 7-0 for the first time since 1979, and will be hot favourites to make that 8-0 at Docklands on Saturday, while St Kilda, a little unlucky to be 13th with a 2-5 record, will take on West Coast at Subiaco on Sunday.
