Match Report

It's taken until round 10 but North Melbourne has finally been defeated in the 2016 AFL season. The Kangaroos went down by 26 points to a very impressive Sydney Swans outfit at the SCG on Friday night. The win was set up on the back of a big first quarter from Sydney, with the Swans kicking six goals to two to take a 23-point lead into quarter time. For the rest of the night, North was playing catch-up football. The Roos did threaten to get back into the match with a three-goal burst late in the second quarter but the Swans bounced back early in the third term to set up a lead that the Kangaroos could never bridge.

After Lance Franklin missed an early shot, Jarrad McVeigh got Sydney going with a long running goal at the three-minute mark. Lindsay Thomas responded with a goal for North after receiving a free kick for a high tackle but the Swans set up a good lead over the next 20 minutes with majors to Josh Kennedy, George Hewett, Franklin twice and Isaac Heeney to open up a break of 31 points. At that stage the Roos looked like they could be blown away but a second goal to Thomas gave North hope going into the first break, the margin reduced to 23 points at that stage.

Thomas made it three goals at the six-minute mark of the seconds term to cut Sydney's lead to 16 but Dan Hannebery settled the Swans with a goal three minutes later, and when McVeigh kicked his second, the margin was back out to 28. The next 20 minutes belonged to North, though. The Roos stifled Sydney's scoring, and majors Ben Brown, Trent Dumont and Todd Goldstein had them back within nine points and well in contention at the long break.

North had a chance to narrow the gap further early in the third quarter but a short from defender Scott Thompson missed and Sydney then wrested back control with goals to Harry Cunningham and Ben McGlynn to lead by 20 at the five-minute mark. Jamie Macmillan pulled one back for the Kangaroos but majors to Tom Mitchell and Gary Rohan saw Sydney out to a 26-point advantage at the last change of ends.

An early last-quarter goal to Robin Hahas had the Kangaroos back within 20 points at the six-minute mark but they couldn't follow up with another major and when Zak Jones goaled at the 14-minute mark, the Swans were 26 points ahead once more with the match safely in their keeping. Each side added a goal to close out the match and Sydney finished the match 26 points clear to move within a game of the top-placed Roos.

Mitchell was outstanding for the Swans, with 10 tackles to go with his 41 possessions. For North, Ben Cunnington (32 disposals) was a fine player all night.

North will now take on Richmond on Friday night at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, keen to maintain its place at the head of the ladder. The Swans will continue their push towards that top spot when they head to Carrara as hot favourites to defeat the Gold Coast Suns.
