Match Report

Confidence is growing and momentum is building down at Tigerland after Richmond had a solid if unspectacular win over Essendon in Saturday night's annual "Dreamtime at the 'G" match. A six-goal-to-three first quarter, backed up by a six-goal-to-two third term, set up the victory, and, although the Bombers narrowly won the second and fourth quarters, the Tigers did enough to suggest that they may yet make an assault on a top-eight position in 2016.

It took less than a minute for the Tigers to get going, with a goal after a mark to Ben Griffiths setting Richmond on its way. After each side added a behind, Brett Deledio also marked and kicked Richmond's second before Mitch Brown kicked Essendon's first after he too marked at the 10-minute mark. The Tigers kicked the next two through Ty Vickery and Shane Edwards, again after marks, but the next two majors went the way of the Bombers via Orazio Fantasia and former Demon Mark Jamar, cutting the margin to seven points. But Richmond closed the term strongly, and goals to Shaun Grigg and Deledio saw them ahead by 20 points at quarter time.

The lead was extended to 27 points at the five-minute mark of the second term when Jack Riewoldt kicked his first from outside 50 but the Bombers had the better of the remainder of the quarter, and majors to Ryan Crowley, Joe Daniher and Fantasia were met with just one goal in response from Richmond - to Sam Lloyd at the 19-minute mark, and the Tigers' lead was back to 16 points at the half.

Goals to Lloyd, Vickery and Trent Cotchin in the first 11 minutes of the third quarter set the match up for Richmond, the Tigers six goals clear by that point. Essendon fought back to a degree over the next period of time, kicking two of the next three majors, but further goals to Grigg and Riewoldt had the result more or less beyond doubt at three-quarter time, the Tigers 41 points clear by that stage.

A brace of goals to Darcy Parish and Daniher gave the Dons brief hope in the first five minutes of the final quarter but they were to be Essendon's last majors. Vickery and Cotchin added goals after that, as the match petered out and Richmond coasted to a 42-point win.

Dustin Martin was an outstanding contributor for the Tigers, gleaning 38 touches and taking 10 marks. For Essendon, David Zaharakis had 30 possessions and laid four tackles, putting him among his side's best.

Having now won three in a row, Richmond will face a stern test this Friday night when they take on North in Hobart this Friday night. The Tigers were knocked out of the finals by North last year and will be keen for revenge. If they can sneak a win against the Roos, they will be right back in the hunt. Essendon will travel to Subiaco on Saturday, and the Bombers will be relatively confident of a claiming a second win for 2016 when they take on Fremantle, which has yet to get a victory on the board this year.
