Match Report

Had this match been a film, the title 'The Great Escape' would have been an appropriate one, with the Western Bulldogs, 'dodging a bullet' and escaping with a 21-point win against a Collingwood outfit that suffered multiple injuries and had no free players on the bench for most of the last quarter. The Magpies led for much of the first three quarters of the game, and could have been a lot further ahead at half time than the five points they were, had it not been for some costly misses in front of goal. In the end, the Bulldogs' broke away in the final term as the undermanned Pies tired and fell away in the last 15 minutes, to record their seventh win and stay in the hunt for a top-four finish.

The Dogs seemed in for a good day when Jack Macrae centred a ball to Jack Redpath who handballed to Tory Dickson for a goal inside the first minute but the Magpies settled after that Alex Fasolo and Darcy Moore after marks had them ahead by seven points after 10 minutes. A mark and goal to Redpath had the Dogs back within a point but a lovely, long, running goal from Magpie skipper Scott Pendlebury had Collingwood ahead by seven again as the term entered time on. A nice long pass from Jake Stringer to Tom Campbell in the goal square saw the Bulldogs get their third and the margin was one point the Pies' way at quarter time.

The second quarter was one that neither side will be looking to record for posterity. The term was riddled with errors, some forced by strong defensive opposition pressure but others were simply the result of poor options and skill. The upshot was that each side scored only one goal, to Moore for Collingwood and to Josh Dunkley for the Dogs. The Pies also missed a few gettable shots and finished the half ahead by five points, 4.7 to 4.1.

Collingwood continued to be the better side for large parts of the third term, and goals to Jarryd Blair and Ben Crocker had the Magpies ahead by 15 points at the midway point. But as their injuries mounted (Toovey, Adams and Fasolo all forced from the field), the Dogs began to get on top and late majors to Marcus Bontempelli and Luke Dahlhaus had them within three points at the last change.

Not long into the last term the Pies lost yet another player, with Darcy Moore taken off with a collarbone injury. Dunkley's second goal after a pass from Redpath put the Bulldogs ahead but Collingwood kept fighting, and a lovely running goal from Adam Treloar put the Magpies back in front after 10 minutes. In the end, though, the injuries took their toll and the Dogs got on top in the last 20 minutes, goals to Dixon, Easton Wood, Matt Suckling and Redpath allowing them to sneak home.

Luke Dahlhaus (37 disposals, six tackles) and Wood (21 possessions, 13 marks and a goal) played great games for the Bulldogs, while Collingwood's best included Jeremy Howe (11 marks, 28 touches) and Steele Sidebottom (26 possessions, nine marks).

The Dogs will meet the West Coast Eagles at Docklands next Sunday, both sides locked on 7-3 records. The Pies have slipped to 4-6 and will be forced to make several changes for Sunday's MCG match against Port Adelaide.
