Match Report

Bouncing back from a loss is the sign of a good side and North Melbourne did that in emphatic style against Richmond on Friday night, thrashing the Tigers by 70 points. Both sides had pre-game hiccups, with North losing coach Brad Scott, who was hospitalised with symptoms of a virus the night before the game, and ruckman Todd Goldstein withdrawing before the match with soreness. Meanwhile, Richmond's Dylan Grimes tweaked a hamstring very late in the pre-game warm-up, with Troy Chaplin called up at the very last moment, so late that he was still in the room getting ready after the game started.

Whether because of the late withdrawal of Grimes or North's pressure, the Tigers appeared rattled from the very start of the match. North had a goal on the board within a minute, with a pass from Robin Nahas ending in a goal to Daniel Wells. Nahas had two shots of his own soon after but missed both but Shaun Atley kicked straight and the Kangaroos were already 14 points ahead after five minutes. The Tigers then got on the board with behinds to Ty Vickery and Corey Ellis but Brent Harvey's first major had North three goals clear. Jack Riewoldt finally kicked Richmond's first goal midway through the term to cut the margin to 12 points, but North added two further goals for the quarter to lead by 23 points at the first change.

North continued on early in the second quarter, with Mason Wood's first goal extending the Kangaroos' lead to 29 points. To its' credit, Richmond stemmed the flow of North's goals after that, the Roos getting only one more through Drew Petrie at the 12-minute mark. But the Tigers could manage only two of their own, via Sam Lloyd and Brett Deledio, and North Melbourne still held sway by 25 points at the long break.

Any thoughts of the Tigers making inroads into the deficit in the third quarter were quickly dispelled when Nick Dal Santo and Daniel Wells goaled in the first three minutes to take the margin out to 37 points. The Kangas did not stop there, with Wood, Majak Daw and Harvey adding further majors and by midway through the term the lead was 57 points and the match as good as over. Vickery scored Richmond's only goal of the term at the 15-minute mark, but Ben Brown's first had North ahead by 57 at the last change.

The last term was little more than academic. After Macmillan kicked the first of the quarter for North, Richmond showed a bit pluck with goals to Vickery and Riewoldt, but the Roos put the foot down after that and two goals to Harvey followed by another to Ben Cunnington had North's lead out to 69 points. Each side added one further major, with the final margin being a more than convincing 70 points, cementing North's spot a game clear of Sydney at the top of the ladder.

Wells was a standout for North, with three goals to go with his 29 possessions, while skipper Trent Cotchin never stopped trying for the Tigers, laying five tackles and gleaning 34 disposals.

A tougher test awaits North Melbourne next Saturday night, with the Roos to take on Geelong (third on the ladder with an 8-3 record) at Docklands, while Richmond should notch up its fifth win of the season against the ailing Suns at the MCG on Sunday.
