Match Report

Three weeks ago, North Melbourne was undefeated and two games clear at the head of the ladder. Now, having lost a second match of three since then, the Kangaroos are still on top but teetering, and could conceivably slip to as low as fourth next week. This scenario  comes after the Roos succumbed to an impressive Geelong at Docklands on Saturday night, the Cats overcoming inaccuracy and a half-time deficit of 10 points to win by 31, a margin that could have been greater had the Cats' woes in front of goal not been compounded by North's contrasting straight-shooting. In the end, Geelong's 15.15 was far too much for the Kangaroos' 12.2.

A mark and goal to Drew Petrie saw North take an early lead in the match, but majors to Jimmy Bartel and Daniel Menzel gave Geelong a seven-point lead at the 11-minute mark. Evergreen Brent Harvey had the Roos back within two points with a mark and goal five minutes later, heralding a period of play that saw the two sides go goal-for-goal until the end of the first term. Darcy Lang and Patrick Dangerfield scored majors in that period for the Cats, while a brace to Jack Ziebell had North within four points at the first break.

A second goal to Menzel kicked off the second term, but this was matched by a second to Harvey fewer than two minutes later. Luke McDonald gave the Kangaroos a lead of a point with his first at the seven-minute mark, and then two further majors to that man Brent Harvey suddenly had North leading by 14 points and looking like it could go on with the job. But the Cats defence tightened up after that, and they began to get on top in general play. Poor kicking for goal cost them, though, with Mark Blicavs, Joel Selwood, Steven Motlop and Lincoln McCarthy all missing shots, leaving North 10 points clear at the long break.

It was in the third quarter that the game turned and Geelong made a decisive break. A running goal from Jimmy Bartel inside the first minute got the Cats going, and they followed up with majors to Shane Kersten (two), Menzel and Kersten again to turn the half-time deficit into a 21-point lead. Petrie clawed one back for North on the stroke of time on, and Lindsay Thomas followed up with another to cut the margin back to nine points but two more goals to Geelong through Menzel and Josh Caddy had the Cats' lead back out to 21 before a last-second goal to Mason Wood had the Roos back within 15 at the last change of ends.

North needed the first goal of the final term but it was the Cats who started the quarter better, and a goal to Mitch Duncan follow by another to Patrick Dangerfield, who had been dominating the midfield, saw Geelong's lead out to a game-high 28 points midway through the term. There was to be no coming back from there by North, each side adding one further goal for the match as Geelong cruised to a vital 31-point win to move to within a game of the Kangaroos' top place on the ladder.

Dangerfield had his best game for the Cats, and arguably the best of his career, collecting an amazing 48 possessions and taking 13 marks. For North, Daniel Wells (31 disposals, five marks) was among the best.

Another Saturday night blockbuster awaits the Cats next week as they take on the fourth-placed Western Bulldogs. With both teams having 9-3 records, the winner of that match will leapfrog North Melbourne should the Kangaroos succumb to fifth-placed Hawthorn (also 9-3) on Friday night.
