Match Report

Rain has followed the Sydney Swans in recent weeks, and it did so again on Sunday as they took to the SCG in their home match against Melbourne. By the end of the match, there was little doubt that the inclement weather did not note adversely affect the Swans, and perhaps even worked in their favour as they overcame a tardy start to ultimately record an easy win over the Demons and move up to second place on the ladder. The final margin of 55 points was perhaps a little unfair on Melbourne, as it was within 25 points of the Swans at the last change before a big last quarter from Sydney blew the Demons away.

Rain had been falling for a couple of hours when the game got under way, and it continued to tumble as the Demons took control of the match in the early stages. The slippery conditions made scoring difficult though, and the net gain from Melbourne's early dominance was a goal to Christian Petracca and a rushed behind. When Sydney finally began to hit the scoreboard after nine minutes, they did so regularly. It resulted in only two goals, one each to Josh Kennedy and Dean Towers, but also another six behinds, and the Swans led 2.6 to 1.1 at the first break.

The Swans started the second term strongly, with a mark and goal to Toby Nankervis, who came into the side in place of the injured Kurt Tippett, extending their lead to 17 points. Dean Kent responded for Melbourne not long after, but Lance Franklin's first had Sydney back out ahead by 17 at the nine-minute mark. Amazingly, that was the last goal of the term, each side scoring two further behinds as the Swans maintained the 17-point advantage at the long break.

Melbourne needed to make the early running in the third term if it was to get back into the match but it was Sydney that did. The Swans attacked heavily in the first five minutes with a goal to Franklin accompanied by three behinds as they jumped out to a 26-point lead. Melbourne briefly regained some momentum after that, and a goal to Petracca cut the margin back to 20 but the only other goal of the third quarter went to Franklin again, and Sydney led by 25 points at three-quarter time.

A scoreless arm-wrestle ensued over the first five minutes of the final quarter, but when the dam wall broke, it broke Sydney's way. Franklin's fourth goal kicked off a run of five in a row to the Swans, and they were suddenly ahead by 56 points halfway through the term. The game slowed down after that, each side adding one further major as Sydney cruised to a 55-point win.

Best for Sydney included Jarrad McVeigh, who had a fine match with 25 touches and nine tackles. For Melbourne, Nathan Jones (25 possessions, nine tackles) put in a great four-quarter performance.

Sydney will have a bye this week before taking on the Western Bulldogs at the SCG on Saturday week. Melbourne will also have round 14 off before hosting Melbourne at the MCG on the Sunday after next.
