Match Report

St Kilda has established a reputation of being a poor side when travelling and it did nothing to change that on Saturday, thrashed by Gold Coast - a team that had lost 10 games in a row - at Carrara on Saturday night. The Saints of this match were hard to reconcile with those of just seven days earlier, a committed group of 20 players that knocked Geelong off the top of the ladder, but this week that same group was made to look second-rate by the Suns, who were impressive in their 40-point win.

The Suns were on song as much as the Saints were off their game right from the start, and they dominated the first 20 minutes of the match to the point where they had 10 scoring shots to none in that period and only inaccuracy prevent the margin from being greater than the 30 points that it was as the term entered time on. By that stage it was 4.6 to nil, with Touk Miller, Nick Malceski, Callum Ah Chee and Tom Lynch having kicked truly for the Suns. After Jade Gresham finally kicked St Kilda's first score, a behind, Gary Ablett's first goal had Gold Coast ahead 36-1 at the 22-minute mark. The Saints finally awoke from their slumber in time-on, adding three quick goals via Jack Lonie, Gresham and Mav Weller to trail by just 18 points at the first break, a margin that ion no way reflected the Suns' dominance for much of the term.

St Kilda had its chances to get right back into the match early in the second term but succumbed to its own inaccuracy, adding 1.4 in the first 10 minutes, Jack Newnes getting the goal but skipper Nick Riewoldt the offender, kicking three behinds. Diion Prestia added a major for the Suns, meanwhile, and Gold Coast led by 15 points after that phase of play. From that point until half time, the Suns reassumed control of the match, adding 3.4 to nil, the goals going to Ryan Davis, Peter Wright and Brandon Matera as they set up a 37-point lead going into the long break.

In terms of general play, the third quarter was probably even split but the Saints inaccuracy went from bad before half time to worse after the long break. St Kilda actually had nine scoring shots to the Suns' seven for the quarter, but its scoreboard return was a lamentable 1.8, Tim Membrey being the only accurate kicker. The Suns added 4.3 in the same period, two of the majors going to Aaron Hall, and took a commanding 50-point lead into the final end-change.

As the Saints continued to miss, adding four behinds in the first 13 minutes of the final term, Peter Wright extended the Suns' lead to 60 points, with his second and third goals, before St Kilda 'papered over the cracks', adding 'junk-time' majors through Membrey, Newnes and Josh Bruce to cut the final margin to 40 points, a nonetheless convincing drought-breaking win to Gold Coast.

Michael Rischitelli played a fine game for the Suns, picking up 33 possessions and taking six marks. For the Saints, Leigh Montagna (25 touches, five marks) was a good four-quarter contributor.

With its fourth win of the year finally on the board, Gold Coast will be very confident of quickly notching up a fifth when it returns to Carrara next Saturday to host the Brisbane Lions, whose one whin of the season came against the Suns in round four at the Gabba. The inconsistent Saints will return to more familiar and comfortable territory on Sunday, hosting co-tenants Essendon at Docklands.
