Match Report

A solid win 'home' in Cairns against an undermanned Gold Coast Suns outfit has enabled the Western Bulldogs to climb from fourth to third on the ladder, enhancing their prospects of a top-two finish. The Dogs set the win up with a big first half, kicking six goals to three in the first term and five to two in the second top set up a commanding 42-point half-time lead. As is often the case in top-end fixtures, the skills deserted both sides to an extent in the heat in the second half, but the Dogs still narrowly won low-scoring third and fourth quarters to win by 48 points.

After a slow start to the match, the Suns drew first blood with a goal to Callum Ah Chee at the seven-minute mark but the Bulldogs clicked into gear soon after that, with a magnificent snap goal from Liam Picken followed up by two in a row from Clay Smith to put the Dogs ahead by two goals after 13 minutes. The Dogs had further chances over the next 10 minutes but Marcus Bontempelli and Jack Redpath each missed two shots at goal, while Tom Lynch made the most of the Suns' rare forays forward, kicking two goals to have Gold Coast within four points after 22 minutes. The Bulldogs hit back strongly late in the quarter, though, and a pair of goals to Koby Stevens followed by another to Tory Dickson had them ahead by 21 points at the first change.

Goals to Jake Stringer and Redpath extended the Dogs' lead to 33 points within four minutes of the second term beginning, and they looked ready to blow the game apart. Ah Chee's second goal cut the difference back to 27 but Mitch Wallis' first goal had the Dogs ahead by 34 midway through the quarter. Brandon Matera clawed one back for the Suns but the Dogs attacked heavily in time on, adding 2.3 to nil - with majors to Lin Jong and Picken - and held a commanding 42-point lead at half time.

Tom Boyd, returning to the side after a long layoff and who had already been involved in a number of goals in the first half, marked and kicked a goal of his own in the first minute of the third term, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 48 points. The Suns responded with Lynch's third soon after, but the rest of the quarter was marred by poor field errors and kicking four goal as the Dogs kicked six behinds and the Suns five to see the Bulldogs' half time extended by just one point at the last end-change.

The Bulldogs went into the final term without Stringer, who sustained a shoulder injury after a bump from Sun Steven May late in the third quarter, but that did not stop them, as Clay Smith's third goal increased their lead to 49 points. The Suns to their credit fought on after that, each side adding a further two majors as the game wound down in terms of intensity and the Bulldogs cruised to an eight-goal win.

Koby Stevens, in his second match back from injury, was a fine player for the winners, with 34 touches to go with his two goals, while Tom Lynch's 11 marks and three goals put him amongst Gold Coast's best players.

Another winnable game await the Bulldogs next Saturday night, St Kilda at Docklands, and a victory there could see them enter the top two, depending on other results. The Suns will return to Carrara on Saturday, and give themselves a chance of recording a sixth win for the season against the 14th-placed Fremantle.
