Match Report

Melbourne's Docklands stadium and St Kilda hoodoos combined once again to haunt them on Sunday afternoon as the Saints recorded a convincing six-goal win against the Demons, a margin that could have been much greater had it not been for poor kicking for goal. It was St Kilda's 14th win in a row against Melbourne, the Demons not having beaten the Saints since the 2006 Elimination Final. It was also the Demons' 23 loss in 24 games at the venue, their only success being a 26-point win over GWS in a 'dead rubber' in round 23 last year.

Belying what was to come in the final three terms, the first quarter saw Melbourne as very much the dominant team. The Demons kicked off with goals to Jeff Garlett and Christian Petracca to take a 10-point lead, before Mav Weller kicked St Kilda's first at the nine-minute mark. Melbourne added further goals through Jack Watts and Aaron Vandenberg and looked very much in control, leading by 16 points at the midpoint of the quarter. Each side added a further two majors for the term and it was the Demons by 17 at quarter time.

The tide looked to have turned St Kilda's way early in the second term but misses to Jack Billings, Luke Dunstan and Mav Weller saw the Saints add just three behinds to one in the first 14 minutes, Melbourne still 15 points ahead at that stage. Tim Membrey's third goal at the 14-minute mark sparked a run of goals for the Saints, though, and follow-ups from Leigh Montagna and Josh Bruce saw them hit the lead at the 19-minute mark. The Demons responded with behinds to Dean Kent and Petracca but a brace of goals to Jarryn Geary - his first majors for the season - saw St Kilda take a 13-point advantage into half time.

Melbourne would have been looking to come out fighting after the long break but it was the Saints that dominated. Holding the Demons scoreless for the first 15 minutes, the Saints could have and should have put the result to bed in that period but their six shots at goal yielded only two majors, one each to Weller and Membrey. That extended the lead to 29 points but Melbourne hit back hard late in the term and goals to Garlett, Max Gawn and Jack Viney had the Demons back within 11 points and well in the hunt at the last end-change.

The match looked to be heading for a grandstand finish when Max Gawn marked strongly and kicked his second to cut the margin to just five points at the seven-minute mark of the final term but that was to be the Demons' last hurrah. A goal to skipper Nick Riewoldt two minutes later sparked a torrent of shots at goal from the Saints and while many of them were spraye wide, accurate kicks from Weller and Dylan Roberton were enough to see St Kilda out to a 26-point lead midway through the term. Ben Kennedy kept Melbourne's hopes alive with a goal at the 21-minute mark but the Saints closed out a solid win with goals to Bruce and Dunstan to finish 36 points clear and stay in the hunt for the finals.

Four goals and 10 marks saw Tim Membrey feature as one of St Kilda's best, while Jack Viney (33 disposals and six tackles) was an outstanding contributor for the Demons,

The Saints could keep their top-eight hopes alive with a win over the third-placed Western Bulldogs at Docklands next Saturday night while Melbourne, whose finals chances have all but evaporated, will face a very tough task at Subiaco on the same day when it takes on the fifth-placed West Coast Eagles.
